The Saturday Mix #45

I've decided to give LightsoverLA a little love for this issue of The Saturday Mix. The first of their remixes I heard was Crystal Castles' Vietnam and I thought it was mind blowing. So I checked out their youtube page and here we are.

Crystal Castles - Suffocation (Memory Tapes Remix)
Haunting.

Wave Machines - Keep The Lights On (Artwork Remix)
Sublimal.

Two Door Cinema Club - What You Know (LightsoverLA Remix)
Thumping!

Crystal Castles - Vietnam (LightsoverLA Remix)
Wickeddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd.

Miike Snow - Billie Holiday (LightsoverLA Remix)
Magnificent.

Local Natives - Wide Eyes (Suckers Remix)
Subdued.

Midnight Juggernauts - Into the Galaxy (Danger Remix)
Over-revved.

The Saturday Mix #43

And "The Saturday Mix" is back and ready to throw out some fine rerubs of the latest songs out there.

Feist - Sea Lion (Chromeo Remix)

Marina and the Diamonds - Oh No!

Marina and the Diamonds - Oh No! (Grum Remix)
Less grrl power and rahrah than the original, but way more oomph.

Cullen - Easily Impressed (Calling In Sick Remix)
That's some wicked, ditty, deep in the deep bass intro.

HURTS - Wonderful Life (Mantronix Remix)

The xx - Shelter (Flinch Dubstep Remix)

The xx - Crystalised (Andy Murphy remix)
Said to be one of the best DJs Down Under, he runs his fingers through ATS favourites The xx's Crystalised. Awesome ear-pounding solid beat that stamps it's mark on the song.

The Saturday Mix #42 - you gotta step up your game to make to the top

Marina and the Diamonds - I Am Not A Robot
Her videos are always so glitzy and glam. She's got pretty damn good control over her range of vocals. A loveable power ballad, singing about vulnerability that a person has but yet puts up defenses.

Marina and the Diamonds - I Am Not A Robot (Doorly Remix)
I'm sorry Marina, I'm just hooked on this uber dope remix. The intro is so upbeat and there's that pert bounce which makes me really wanna get out of my seat and bounce to the beat. The dubby thing going on after is pretty neat, befitting of the overall mood of the song but it does cover the vocals a little at times. It's so unbelievably catchy, and that robotic voice that just repeats the word robot at the repetitive chorus is funky! Really slick remix that in my opinion came undone by the unnecessary extension of doowops and more repeating of the word robot.

Miike Snow - Silvia (Roboberget Remix)
Fantastic remix with plenty reverb going on. "An extended track length (eight minutes), a slightly boosted tempo, and an assortment of futurist synths — some washy and cinematic, others arpeggiated and video game-like — it's a new, but not unfamiliar, incarnation of Silvia, crafted by those who know it best." as said by someone. Right on the dot. I love the 8-bit video-game-ish sounds, it's just wicked.

Two Door Cinema Club - Something Good Can Work
Here's some music maths. Catchy lyrics + breezy synths + funky guitaring = please-dance-to-it-synthpop. Alright full marks, thanks!

Two Door Cinema Club - Something Good Can Work (The Twelves Remix)
The start of the remix sounds suspiciously like La Roux's Bulletproof, which is repeated a couple of times later. Nevertheless, it doesn't take the shine off the magic of The Twelves. Just when you think the songs can't get any better, brazilian duo The Twelves trots along and their electro-disco twist makes it an irresistable hit.

Monarchy - Gold in the Fire (We Have Band Remix)
That's some monster drumbeat.

Monarchy - The Phoenix Alive (Kris Menace Remix)
As mysterious as the band itself (no one knows their identity yet, I think), Kris Menace brings this seriously dope remix to our ears. Thumping bass that threatens to pound your eardrums to bits, even more doowops than the stars in their eyes, this is mind-bogglingly amazing.

The Saturday Mix #41 - just gimme a second and i'll tell you

Got the picture of the cassette from here.

Hidden Cameras - Underage
Really comical video whatwith all the painted faces, even more so when they go "wa-ooh-wa-ooh-wa-ooh". Right off the bat as they stare at each other and break off in unison after a cacophony of birds chirping, it somehow feels right. Lovely catchy beat and lyrics I've yet to fully comprehend. And the shower (of I don't know what) at the end is beautiful.

Hidden Cameras - Underage (Holy Fuck Remix)

Sebastian Tellier - La Ritournelle (Mr. Dan's Magic Wand Remix)
Twinkly xylophones (probably a sample) dot this relax soundscape by Mr Tellier.

Shout Out Louds - Fall Hard
How does a rock song feel so elegant and punchy at the same time?

Shout Out Louds - Fall Hard (Passion Pit's Summertime Radio Remix)
This sounds like a keeper. It has a Neon Indian feel to the remix, going all psych rock on this song. The synths add a different dimension to this song, lovely.

Music Go Music - Warm In The Shadows (Fred Falke Remix)
Fred Falke does an 8-bit treatment of this song. Feels really warm and summery. Let's do the boogey now and get sashaying down the streets!

Florrie - Panic Attack (Fred Falke Extended Mix) (mp3)
Link provided by her own site.

Ooh, one woman show it seems. And if Fred Falke graces her songs with his magic, he's prolly seeing something in her. And rightfully so, she sounds polished and that bassline sounds sweet as hell.

The Saturday Mix #39

Music Go Music - Light Of Love

Music Go Music - Light Of Love (diskJokke Remix) (mp3)
Up and coming Norwegian dude with a penchant for making some pretty dope remixes.

Foals - Olympic Airways (Supermayer Remix)

Lykke Li - Dance Dance Dance (Buraka Som Sistema Remix)
Those loops sound delicious as hell. Love that deep pulsing beat. Is that a genre that sounds like that? Pretty sure there is.

Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (Hercules Club Remix)
Interesting take on the song. They turned the horns part into something more electro sounding. You feel the bounce? Yeah, it's there.

Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (Cassette Club Remix)

Holiday for Strings - Two of You (The Toxic Avenger Remix)

Au Revoir Simone tomorrow night!!

The Saturday Mix #38 - asleep for twenty years with this feeling

Sebastien Tellier - Divine (Danger Remix)
Oh so divine. What do you get when Danger does a mix on divine music? You get a dangerously divine song. (Cheesy I know, but had to let it out.)

Mille - Crysteena (Fear of Tigers Remix)
Mille means 1000 in French. Wonder if it's derived as such.

Fear of Tigers - The Adventures of Pippi Longstrump (Diamond Cut Remix)
Who is Pippi Longstrump? I have a feeling it's Pippi Longstocking, a fictional character in a series of children's books by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, and adapted into multiple films and television series. In Swedish, it's Pippi Långstrump; Pippi Langstrømpe in Norwegian; and Pippi Langstrumpf in German.

Scanners - Salvation (Don Diablo Remix)
Just how do you turn a rock song into a dancefloor mix?

Metric - Sick Muse (Adam Freeland Remix)
I'm in love with this remix, it's way too dope. NOO! He broke up the "I'll write you harmony in C".

The Radio Dept. - David (The Rice Twins remix)
This is going down with me as slow and purposeful. Good beat, could be semi chillout too, for a change of pace.

Beni - Maximus (Harvard Bass Remix)

The Saturday Mix #37 - i'm obsessed with the mess that's america

Marina & the Diamonds - Hollywood
Fresh song and tongue in cheek on what Hollywood is in the eyes Marina Lambrini Diamandis. Sweeet stuff.

Marina & the Diamonds - Hollywood (Monarchy 'Gliese' Remix)

Miike Snow - Silvia (Hook N Sling & Goodwill Remix)
Silvia was always there for the picking. Glad to see more remixes on this fantastic dance ballad. Extended remix which is hell sleek. It plays up the tempo at right moments, inducing involuntary body movement; and down tempo at nice smooth chunks where you just wanna soak that beat in.

The xx - Basic Space (diskJokke Remix)
An injection of scratchy and out of this world beats make this one fine remix.

Delphic - Halcyon
More Delphic with rock infused electro this time round. I like this touch that veers off the track beaten out by their electronic music.

Delphic - Halcyon (L-Vis 1990 Remix)
This is threatening to make a riot out of my mind.

Massive Attack - Paradise Circus (Breakage's Tight Rope Remix)
I swear that Hope Sandoval's vocals can wipe armies in an instant. Captivating, murmur at times, sensual at others, but whatever it is, it's like a massive magnet.

The Saturday Mix #36

Massive Attack - Paradise Circus (Gui Boratto Remix)

Yeasayer - Ambling Alp (Memory Tapes Remix)
I like the remix, except for that odd bit starting around 2:20, it kinda spoiled the whole shizzle. Damn it.

Broken Social Scene - World Sick
Anomaly here, but just in from here, Broken Social Scene's releasing their new album "Forgiveness Rock Record" on May 4. Say what? What's music without BSS and their motley crew of talented musicians? Oh have we been waiting for this day. Get a listen on the free track they've provided, World Sick. It's one massive track and let's hear a collective O-M-G please. Gradual build up of the intro built around country-ish strumming that is an indication of how wonderful this song could/would/will be. You think that the song title is about how the world is "sick", still on the road to recovery from all the what nots that have happened in 2009? Smooth pace and strong vocals with prerequisite rock stuff and precise orchestration from BSS ensure that hype for their upcoming album will build. Will it be a climatic explosion like around 4:00 or lukewarm like around 5:05? I sure hope it's the former and will be waiting for May 4 with eager anticipation.

Ellie Goulding - Starry Eyed
Pop at it's boppy best. A few remixes here and there and it's all primed for the sweaty grinding of the dance floor. Pretty fanciful video.

Ellie Goulding - Starry Eyed (Monarchy Remix)
Slowed down remix suited for closing the night but it totally belies the fact that it's two hot new acts in one song, cue supernova. Spacey feel tendered by Monarchy that makes you feel all doozy and Ellie Goulding's vocals messing with your mind. Lovely.

Ellie Goulding - Starry Eyed (Penguin Prison feat. Theophilus London Remix)
Solid and power packed, Theophilus London gives it his treatment with some additional vocals for that R&B touch and Penguin Prison runs it through the works. Voila, let's roll people.

Monarchy - Gold In The Fire (Flak Attack Remix)
Got your order! One dope remix coming right up. I don't know who Flak Attack is, but one thing for sure this is a fucking sick remix. It definitely can stop a raging bear right in it's tracks, much less me. Beam me up Scotty! Maybe a new autoKratz + Delphic. Don't bet against it, but Monarchy's gonna be huge.

The Saturday Mix #35 - i'm alone in life to say

Sebastien Tellier - Divine
This dude with all the scraggly beard and all, looks like a certain saviour of the world in a certain tome. (I don't mean any insult, just an entirely innocuous comment, I swear.) But anyhow, back to what I wanted to say, he was selected to represent France in Eurovision 2008 with this song. Love the upbeat vibe and the nonchalance with which he sings about looking for a band and finding the Milky Way.

Sebastien Tellier - Divine (Danger Remix)
Extended remix for your listening pleasure.

Chairlift - Evident Utensil
Check this out at RCRD LBL. Psychedelic madness. Oooh oooh ooohs filled the airspace as you feel yourself go all slushy while those electronic beats pulsate.

Chairlift - Evident Utensil (Jacques Renault Remix)

Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (Frankie Knuckles Remix)
This had to come sooner or later, with all the love I've been giving to the original. Down tempo mix that's given it a house sort of beat. Niceeeeeeee!

HURTS - Wonderful Life (Arthur Baker remix)

Simian Mobile Disco - Cruel Intentions (feat. Beth Ditto) (Joker Dubstep Remix)

The Saturday Mix #34

The Temper Trap - Fader
Third single of their album "Conditions", and riding on the success of Sweet Disposition and Science of Fear, I think they decided to release this. Personally, it's not bad, good rock stuff with pretty solid riffs, but nothing spectacular - the previous two were definitely better.

The Temper Trap - Fader (Adam Freeland Remix)
Nice electro twist to this song, but at certain points, it becomes a bit of an overkill.

Phoenix - Fences (Delphic Remix)
Danceable remix by Mancunians Delphic, but a tad too long don't you think? But I doubt that when you're high on booze (and maybe drugs), you'd really be nitpicking about the length of the song.

The Raveonettes - Last Dance (Kap10kurt Dream Mix)
Nice and groovvvvy. This remix is tight, and adds more bounce to an already bouncey track. There's a Sound of Arrows feel don't you think so? Collab please!

Delphic - Doubt (MXWL Remix)
Pretty decent dubstep remix, but not the rock-your-socks-and-clothes-off-and-I-need-to-get-moving-right-now kind.

Wolf Gang - The King and All His Men (Joe Goddard Remix)

Miike Snow - Silvia (Sinden Remix)
Wow, finally Silvia gets it's turn at a remix. From total electro-ballad to dance-floor dope.

The Saturday Mix #33 - on buses that move through the night

Delphic - Doubt (Riton Re-Rub)
Triple R treatment. Now this is one sick remix. It makes you move, like really move. Right off the bat, the ahh ahh eee eee ehh ehh's set the whole mood before plunging in some slow groove and suddenly it explodes around the minute mark. This is such an awesome remix of one of my favourite songs at the moment.

Au Revoir Simone - Sad Song (Pacific Remix)

MEN - Simultaneously
MEN is a Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective that focuses on the energy of live performance and radical potential of dance music. Very interesting stuff they have.

MEN - Simultaneously (Lauren Flax Remix)
Long remix, but good.

Matthew Dear - Don & Sherri (Hot Chip Remix)

The xx - VCR (Matthew Dear Remix)
I love this! And I can't wait for The xx and Florence + the Machine to come, in about 2 weeks time. MUCH LOVE!

Au Revoir Simone - Another Likely Story (Neon Indian Remix)
Neon Indian's psychedelia is very present here.

The Saturday Mix #32 - love is all we are, the rest amounts to nothing

Rob - Femme et Enfant (feat. Sebastien Tellier)
I don't know what genre is this, but I can hear the piano/keyboard, bass drums and what not. But whatever it is, this song is really really good.

Owl City - Fireflies
The first thing I noticed about him was that he (Owl City = Adam Young) sounded a hell lot like someone, and a few moments later, The Postal Service popped right into my head. This was corroborated with some googling and wiki-ing of Owl City, which yielded many references to him ripping The Postal Service off. I'm not one for mudslinging really, but well, he's selling the goods and making the money (off someone's coattails, most might add). Anyhow, check out this scathing review by Pitchfork. I'm surprised they even gave him a 1, with a "review" like that, I was expecting a -100.

Owl City - Fireflies (Marlow Remix)
Ok, I actually didn't wanto give Owl City a run here. Let me tell you the whole thing. When I first heard of Owl City, I immediately went meh. I mean, Owl City? It sounds retarded. And I put off listening to anything by him. Then first came this remix via RCRD LBL, and so I just had to listen it (it's the itch, curiosity kills the cat). The remix didn't change much of the original, just taking the synth pop and adding the touch of bass and groove to make it dance floor ready. And it brought me to the original and voila, I opened up a can of worms for myself. I just had to bring this out for discussion.

So what do you think of Owl City - young chap that got a lucky break from posting his stuff on myspace or virtual rip-off who deserves nothing?

Primary 1 & Riton - Radiates

Primary 1 & Riton - Radiates (Riton Rerub)
I'm getting LAZY!

Kaskade & deadmau5 - I Remember (Strobelite Edit)

Vibrasphere - Tierra Azul
Check out this semi-ambient down-tempo track. One word - nice. One guess where they're from.

Yeahh, SWEDEN! Pure gold.

The Saturday Mix #31

We're well into the 9th day of the new year, and boy does the hype machine not stop. First up is obviously Vampire Weekend's new album "Contra".

Vampire Weekend - Cousins
Fun. Unadulterated fun. Uproarious unadulterated fun. I'm still stuck on the fact that I can't find any remixes (or good ones amongst the handful out there for that matter). So, we'll settle for a remix of a track from their fantastic debut album. But will they reuse those tricks that made "Vampire Weekend" such an awesome album? Looks like we'll know in 2 days time (but I heard it's available on iTunes. lazy to check though).

Vampire Weekend - The Kids Don't Stand a Chance (Miike Snow Remix)
Elements so familiar to all Miike Snow listeners are present in this remix, which might explain why the short synth intro sounded so familiar. I like this remix, well, not surprising. Anything with a good deep bass beat is generally good to me, the rest is how the remixer makes of it.

Vampire Weekend - The Kids Don't Stand a Chance (Chromeo Remix)
A Chromeo remix.

Delphic - Doubt (Joey Silver Remix)
Also hitting the racks on 11 Jan is Delphic's much hyped "Acolyte". Hype works two ways, they could "make it or break it". When hype builds, expectations increase. What if someone (esp those major reviewers) pan it, then does it all go to waste as the hype becomes backlash? But I've got much confidence in their debut album. With singles such as This Momentary, Counterpoint and Doubt already circulating for quite a while, "Acolyte" will certainly do well in my opinion. And I guess the hype stems from the fact that these tracks have been around for a while, and people totally dig it. Oh well. That's hype for you.

This is what Richard Boardman said: "The word backlash has more realness than the word hype for us. There’s a danger and there’s nothing we can do about it. We are just who we are. We’ve already written these songs and we’re still learning how to play some of them live so, to be hyped and then to be backlashed is just one of those crazy things that can happen, but hopefully we can just live up to it and be better." Also, Delphic came in third in BBC's Sound of 2010 list. In the very same list, Ellie Goulding came out tops. Hype indeed.

Yeasayer - O.N.E

Yeasayer - O.N.E (MMMathias Remix)
Well, I kinda like the song as a song. But as a remix of O.N.E, I'm lost. I can't hear the original at all!

Vitalic - Poison Lips (Captain Flash Remix)

The Saturday Mix #30

Bibio - Lover's Carvings (Leatherette Remix)
Peculiar and interesting. I'm still on the fence on this one, but leaning towards the good side.

The Sound of Arrows - Into the Clouds (Fear of Tigers Remix)
Sounds so slick. Keep moving to the beat, just keep moving! It should sit right in a Peter Pan soundtrack! The song is set to the 1985 film Explorers starring Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix.

Small Black - Despicable Dogs
This the the lo-fi that's been all the rage of late - hazy and nostalgic, and yeah, it's soooooo gooooooood.

Small Black - Despicable Dogs (Washed Out Remix)

Ellie Goulding - Under The Sheets (Pariah Remix)
Enjoy the bleeps and bloops. And the pretty cool video.

Lindstrøm & Christabelle - Baby Can't Stop (Idjut Boys Remix)
Pretty 60s jazzy feel.

Lindstrøm & Christabelle - Baby Can't Stop (Aeroplane Remix)

The Saturday Mix #29

Monarchy - Gold in the Fire (Diamond Cut Remix)
Remember Monarchy from yesterday? Diamond Cut's here with a remix of Gold In The Fire. The remix has more depth, but less buzz. I think I like the original better; the deeper beats sort of take away the allure that his voice gives to the song.

Penguin Prison - A Funny Thing
Penguin Prison as a name, certainly makes you think twice about whether you want to take a listen or not - I mean Penguin Prison? BUT, nowadays there's all sorts of quirky, kooky, random names that you can't let the band name affect you. And it helps that there's been some hype surrounding this one man show. As with his previous single Animal Animal, his brand of electro-pop certainly gets you moving.

another day has come and gone/i feel the same/i can't be wrong

Penguin Prison - A Funny Thing (Monarchy Remix)
And now, we have a Monarchy remix on the above song. Pretty interesting outcome, hear that distinct but not overtly overwhelming beat in the background? (some remixes turn on the beat so deep and intense such that it totally drowns out the original) Kinda nice - sounds like the electronic.

Delphic - This Momentary (ALGERONICS Remix)
This is a not bad remix, but I had to settle for this cos I couldn't find the one I wanted. Still, quite a decent mix by ALGERONICS. Very trance-ish.

Thieves Like Us - Drugs In My Body (Designer Drugs Remix)
I bet it's no coincidence they decided to remix this song. I mean Drugs in the song title, and Drugs in their name? HAHA! The original was way trippy if you've heard it (or if you haven't, click the Thieves Like Us label at the end of this post and you can prolly find it in one of the posts), and this remix is uber sleek. It's like taking ecstacy on the first song, and the remix is taking ecstacy plus weed. It's not overwhelming, it's bass-y, in one word - DOPE (pun intended, totally).

Mayer Hawthorne - Green Eyed Love
The video is really really funny, and his voice is cute/pitchy/wtf? I mean how can he keep it that way for the entire song?! Unless he sounds like that normally which I doubt so.

Mayer Hawthorne - Green Eyed Love (Classixx Remix)

Note: Vote for best album of 2009 here.

The Saturday Mix #28 - i wanna breathe that fire again

It's high time I changed the picture of this weekly fixture.

The Sound of Arrows - Danger!
maybe you're in danger, and you don't even know it. don't talk to strangers and know when to quit. such cute lyrics!

The Sound of Arrows - Danger! (Mr Pedro Remix)

Animal Collective - My Girls (Gigamesh Remix)
Yes, fabulous mix of a fantastic song. The psychedelic of the song is still present, but Gigamesh throws in quite a fair bit of ravey and turns it out into a fairly danceable tune. I like it. Speaking of AC, I was actually wondering if I should even do a poll of best album of the year. But I don't think anyone would vote. HAHA.

The Killers - Read My Mind (Gabriel & Dresden Remix)
Josh and Dave take one of the hottest track's off "Sam's Town" and turn it into a trance beat. It runs a whopping 10plus minutes, with an intro and outro.

The Killers - Mr. Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont Mix)
Jacques Lu Cont, also known as Thin White Duke but his real name is Stuart Price, does his stuff on a song from their debut album "Hot Fuss"

Muse - Undisclosed Desires
The second single of "The Resistance" is smashing. Not the usual rock, more balladic but smashing nonetheless. The lyrics are so damn good as well. Top notch Muse. I really can't wait to see them in Feb.

I want to reconcile the violence in your heart
I want to recognise your beauty is not just a mask
I want to exorcise the demons from your past
I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart

Muse - Undisclosed Desires (Thin White Duke Mix)
Quite a decent mix, but I still like the original better.
