it's never quite as it seems

Passion Pit - Dreams (The Cranberries Cover)
A lovely cover by Passion Pit in my opinion. Bringing their trademark synths into play, a spacey and ethereal rendition of the delicate original. Check out the original here.

Trentemøller - Sycamore Feeling
As per the video description, "Sycamore Feeling is a beautifully melancholic downtempo song with haunting vocals courtesy of singer Marie Fisker. Fiskers sensual, intoxicating performance, framed by a lush instrumentation with lots of ambience, make this another great Trentemøller-track." (sic)

Frightened Rabbit - Not Miserable
Quaint ole Scottish indie rock.

Fanfarlo - Comets
Like a streak of comet across the midnight sky, it blazes a trail with it's fantastic orchestral arrangements and slowly disappears into oblivion, but not before impressing itself upon onlookers.

The Saturday Mix #41 - just gimme a second and i'll tell you

Got the picture of the cassette from here.

Hidden Cameras - Underage
Really comical video whatwith all the painted faces, even more so when they go "wa-ooh-wa-ooh-wa-ooh". Right off the bat as they stare at each other and break off in unison after a cacophony of birds chirping, it somehow feels right. Lovely catchy beat and lyrics I've yet to fully comprehend. And the shower (of I don't know what) at the end is beautiful.

Hidden Cameras - Underage (Holy Fuck Remix)

Sebastian Tellier - La Ritournelle (Mr. Dan's Magic Wand Remix)
Twinkly xylophones (probably a sample) dot this relax soundscape by Mr Tellier.

Shout Out Louds - Fall Hard
How does a rock song feel so elegant and punchy at the same time?

Shout Out Louds - Fall Hard (Passion Pit's Summertime Radio Remix)
This sounds like a keeper. It has a Neon Indian feel to the remix, going all psych rock on this song. The synths add a different dimension to this song, lovely.

Music Go Music - Warm In The Shadows (Fred Falke Remix)
Fred Falke does an 8-bit treatment of this song. Feels really warm and summery. Let's do the boogey now and get sashaying down the streets!

Florrie - Panic Attack (Fred Falke Extended Mix) (mp3)
Link provided by her own site.

Ooh, one woman show it seems. And if Fred Falke graces her songs with his magic, he's prolly seeing something in her. And rightfully so, she sounds polished and that bassline sounds sweet as hell.

The Saturday Mix #39

Music Go Music - Light Of Love

Music Go Music - Light Of Love (diskJokke Remix) (mp3)
Up and coming Norwegian dude with a penchant for making some pretty dope remixes.

Foals - Olympic Airways (Supermayer Remix)

Lykke Li - Dance Dance Dance (Buraka Som Sistema Remix)
Those loops sound delicious as hell. Love that deep pulsing beat. Is that a genre that sounds like that? Pretty sure there is.

Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (Hercules Club Remix)
Interesting take on the song. They turned the horns part into something more electro sounding. You feel the bounce? Yeah, it's there.

Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (Cassette Club Remix)

Holiday for Strings - Two of You (The Toxic Avenger Remix)

Au Revoir Simone tomorrow night!!

like stars burning holes right through the dark

Well, here's a lot of music to compensate for the lack of music for the past couple of days, been celebrating.

Nedry - Apples & Pears
Pretty interesting song with quite haunting vocals and electronic-ky stuff going on. Sometimes it's semi/full acoustic-electronic, if you get my drift. Oh like another song, Clouded which is terrific in my opinion. A little ambient, if you discount the whole blips and electronic thingamajig.

Ayu - Marching of the Night
She's the vocalist of Nedry. This track was her solo work, which shows how good her vocals are.

Discovery - Orange Shirt (mp3)
UBER cute, sweet little love song, just don't die on the sugar overdose. I really didn't expect this when clicking play. Neat touch that most can appreciate.

The xx - Basic Space (mp3)
For those not on The xx bandwagon yet (when are you ever gonna get on it huh?), get right on now with this download offered on their parent label site. You'd be hard-pressed to not love their music.

Run Toto Run - Sleepyhead (Passion Pit Cover)
Holy crikes, check this awesome cover of Passion Pit's song. Fantastic rendition without ANY synths or electronica or whatever. Just the guitar, xylophone, simple keyboard which she almost doesn't seem to use, a banjo or ukulele (i can't really make it out in the shadow) and violin. Damn it, it's good man. And the two guys in headmasks playing their instruments, esp the violin made me burst out in laughter. The whole juxtaposition is hilarious. Props much to Run Toto Run.

Here's what they said on myspace under this embedded video, "Email mail@runtotorun.co.uk and we'll email you the mp3".

The Big Pink - Love In Vain
All nice and slow, good change from their usual sound.

Anya Marina - Whatever You Like (T.I. Cover)
Really sexy and breathy cover of T.I.'s popular dance floor song. A collab for the two and a single, how about that?

The Polyamorous Affair - Merry Go Round
Belle du jour, rigga rigga? Party till the break of dawn. Solid track that's as good as New York City.

50 Favourite Songs of 2009: Part III

Asobi Seksu - Thursday (Acoustic)
For those familiar with Asobi Seksu, Thursday was a track of their 2006 album "Citrus". This is an acoustic reinterpretation of that wonderful track cut at famed Olympic Studios in London, amongst other reimaginations of their best work which makes up "Rewolf". Much more sparse and their sonic layers stripped, leaving Yuki's warbling to power the song. It's more affecting but not as strong musically as the original. However, the warm feeling one gets from James' guitar and beauty derived from the emphasis placed on her vocals in this sparer version makes this an enjoyable and repeatable listen.

Listen to the original here.

Miike Snow - Black & Blue
This totally slow-groove ballad makes me go ape SMD style. Plus, there's a totally wicked official video. A very old man with pretty old school music instruments and stuff, with his weird contraptions playing them (which appears to play accordingly to the beats/sounds of the song, like the mechanical hand tapping the piano at the appropriate moments). Seems to me he's all trapped up in his house (of his own volition), and all of a sudden he decides to make it out that door. And as he does so, he hugs a stunned teen, walks down the street, tosses his seemingly permanently on headphones and then sheds his robe, embracing the sunlight. All while the trio that is Miike Snow are in the car staring after him.

I won't waste your time with my revelation/Hello my friend, I see you're back again/Hello mystery, don't bother to explain

Embrace this number (like the old dude) along with it's plethora of remixes and hold on while I leave this on repeat.

Vitalic - Poison Lips
Sensual dance song, with the synths working overtime. The song is tight and not overdone, coming in at nearly 4 minutes - so it doesn't give you that overdose of synths and heavy beats that if not done well (think steak) leaves a bad aftertaste. It swirls and loops and infuses you with all that psychedelia that I'm not sure I want to make the trip back. Enjoy this song, and the video for dessert.

official, myspace, last.fm

Camera Obscura - French Navy
First single from awesome album "My Maudlin Career" does not fail to delight with it's lightness and comfortable beat and rhythm. French Navy is an upbeat story of meeting a new lover in a dusty library “by a trick of fate”. Tracyanne Campbell croons "You make me go, "Oooh"/With the things that you do, you do, you do" before chorus kicks in. It may sound like yet another love song, but this is a Camera Obscura love song, besides it's not all weepy and heartbreak. There's some happiness amid all that gloom which makes this a pretty neat musing that still manages to sound fresh.

Passion Pit - Little Secrets
These guys would prolly remind everyone else of MGMT. Enjoy this electro-funk coupled with falsetto vocals plus wonderful production of a gem called Little Secrets which ironically wasn't that little, seeing how it was blogged about by nearly every another blog when it was leaked prior to it's official release.

official, myspace, last.fm

Franz Ferdinand - No You Girls
BBC: "...this is a very typical Franz Ferdinand song. It's slinky, it's a bit disco, it's a bit guitary, it's anti-macho, but also quite blokey in the chorus. The lyrics point toward sexual politics, and the lack of understanding between boys and girls..."

It nearly sounds like Take Me Out but manages to stand out on it's own with sleeker productions.

official, myspace, last.fm

Phoenix - Rome
Well, if you're wondering what's another Phoenix track doing here, it's because they damn well deserve it. This track is also just as awesome, it starts off upbeat and rampant, going all out to have their fun singing about "Who's the boy you like the most/Is he teasing you with underage?" The signature pop hooks and catchy lyrics that make you want to sing along is present, as is the word silhouette which seems to appear in a couple of the tracks in "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix". Almost midway, the
track drops tempo and eases you into muses of heartbreak before breaking out into it's glorious final chorus.

official, myspace, last.fm

Beat Radio - Stranger Flowers(mp3)
This is an mp3 link from their official site. A melancholic love song that sounds every bit like a lovelorn boy singing his heart out to... no one. It's really emotive (and the lyrics are hackneyed to some extent) and it's just Brian Sendowitz pouring his heart out in this acoustic track, which more than makes up for the "hackneyed" lyrics. Really sweet and lovely song and watch out for Beat Radio, they've certainly got more beckoning for them.

official, myspace, last.fm

fun. - Be Calm
Fun is the name of the game and it's also in their name. This track is full of carnival-esque joy and showmanship and lyrical genius. It's a joy to listen to this track on it's own and it's a wonder how he manages to cram all those whopper of lyrics into all of a little over 4 minutes.

official, myspace, last.fm

Memory Tapes - Green Knight
This is pretty much their website and it's where you can find a download of their fantastic track Green Knight. I'm not putting up their own mediafire link, because the previous time I did, I gotta into a shitload of trouble and I'm not keen on getting that all over. Hint hint: It's the October post.

The Saturday Mix #25 - you caught me under false pretense

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Higher Than the Stars (Saint Etienne Visits Lord Spank Mix)
Pretty long band name plus 2 collabs on the remix = what a mouthful this title is. Very slow version, almost fit for ballroom dancing.

Muse - Supermassive Black Hole (Emre B Remix)
The remix at times tends to overwhelm the song, but overall pretty decent remix.

Miike Snow - Black & Blue (Jaymo & Andy George Remix)

Feist - My Moon My Man (Boys Noize Classic Remix)
I had never ever expected there to be a remix of such a song! It's like does Rachael Yamagata have a remix? Maybe I should go check it out and see if there's a remix of her. This is really cool, probably Alexander Ridha (Boys Noize is just his stage name) running his voice through the vocoder to give that "My Moon My Man" backdrop beat. FUNKY! And he doesn't ruin the original at that, it's more intertwined, giving My Moon My Man an alternative life as a dance song. It's a real pleasant surprise.

Two Door Cinema Club - I Can Talk (Crystal Fighters Remix)
Remember them? Here's a Crystal Fighters remix.

Passion Pit- Sleepyhead (LOL Boys Remix)
I don't like the first 2 minutes of the song, where they just added in stuff for the sake of doing so. The portion where the remix was done on the song was so much better. It would suffice if you cut the first 2 minutes off.

MSTRKRFT - Heartbreaker (feat. John Legend) (Laidback Luke Remix)
Dutch maestro Luke van Scheppingen gives his spin on this MSTRKRFT favourite.

The Saturday Mix #23 - what’s the use of keeping all the good things that you’ve found to yourself

Delorean - Seasun
Carrots in the sky. LOL! Very beach party song that I'm pretty sure would have everyone grooving to. It's very euphoric in its beats, quite heavy and sets the mood fast. The guys at Delorean said this, Delorean is an unheard of scenario in popular music: 4 guys from the Basque country currently based in Barcelona, free as air, high on O2, who have gradually moved away fromthe punk scene, and are now ready to embrace the kind of club music that a pop band would play. Also, they are currently working on their full length album, which I'm anticipating.

Delorean - Seasun (John Talabot's Kids and Drums Remix

Delorean - Deli (Acid Girls Remix)
It is indeed a deli-cious song. It's not too bad actually, but I much prefer the original to it.

Violens - Doomed (MGMT Remix)
Pretty sweet remix here, given treatment by MGMT of Kids and Time To Pretend fame. I am so in love with this song. There's a lot of unadulterated

Gotye - Learnalilgivinanlovin
One of the most feel good songs I've heard in a while. Guess where he's from.(Yes, Gotye is a one man show named Wally De Backer who's apparently born in Belgium but based Down Under.) He says
"Aussies should pronounced Gotye as “gore-ti-yeah”, using that inimitably dry and elongated sound they call an “accent”!

Wally can say that because he was born in Belgium (and he speaks English good).

Parties from overseas wishing to “name-check” Wally’s musical moniker should employ a complex system of pops and clicks, or alternatively, engage in a series of hand symbols that represent the following character: §."
I'm starting to like this guy, and his music.

Anyhow, following this, is a Passion Pit remix of the above song.

Gotye - Learnalilgivinanlovin (Passion Pit Remix)
As Gotye says, gotta learnalilgivinanlovin. Hence Passion Pit has given us this pretty dope remix.

The Temper Trap - Science of Fear (Hervé Remix)

Note: I can't think of what to feature for the usual end of month post. Ran out of ideas. If anyone can suggest something to feature, please do so in the comments or drop me a mail! Any suggestions and ideas would be greatly appreciated! Meanwhile, enjoy The Saturday Mix.

The Saturday Mix #22 - i stand outside under broken leaves

This French pack here is dope. The whole world should get to know their music. And yes, Phoenix have been heavily remixed, which is a good thing. There's many different and new takes of their fantastic songs. I know that they've been really remixed so much, but it seems like there's a million remixes out there. It's rabid! Don't know if the remixes will ever stop rolling in like hot cakes off the pan, but I don't think I'll tire of them(and the remixes) though they should do more remixes of songs like Rome and Armistice, instead of 1901 and Lisztomania. Anyhow, testament to that, Phoenix decided to commission a release - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Remix Collection) - an eclectic compilation of 15 remixes of their songs by Yacht, Passion Pit, Animal Collective and Friendly Fires just to name a few. It just dawned on me how their album cover is of them dropping bombs, and it seems like they really dropped bombs filled with the best stuff in music.

Small little tidbit. I'm pretty sure many of you guys have heard of Daft Punk. Even I heard of them when I was younger. Band members Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, together with Laurent Brancowitz made up Darlin', an indie rock outfit, albeit for a short period. However, things didn't pan out as well and I think they disbanded. This led to Laurent joining up with Phoenix while Guy-Manuel and Thomas made up Daft Punk. Interesting huh.

Phoenix - Fences (Grincheux And Dangereux mix)

Phoenix - Fences (Nujax Remix)

Phoenix - Rome (Neighbors feat. Devendra Banhart Remix)
Not your usual remix - it's normally a dancier, more souped up version of a song - but this is slower, remixed down. Really love it.

Phoenix - Love Like A Sunset (Animal Collective Remix)

Phoenix - Love Like A Sunset (Shuttle Remix)
This trippy mix is by Shuttle, who's Nate Donmoyer of Passion Pit. Music is so exciting right now.

Phoenix- 1901 Bo Flex'd (Passion Pit Remix)

Phoenix - Lisztomania (Alex Metric Remix)

there's sadness written on every corner

The Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage
Whoever this Geoff McFetridge guy is, he is so damn brilliant, doing all the hand drawn animations. It really fits well with the whole song, tune, beat and all.

Neon Indian - Terminally Chill
First, it was Deadbeat Summer, now there's Terminally Chill. Is this how taking psychedelic drugs feel like? The wailing rise and fall of synth beats was particularly good, drew me into the song.

Passion Pit - Folds In Your Hands
Feeeeel it rainnn, feeeel it rainnn.

ohh and i bet you guys already know, Moth's Wings was used as the closing song on Gossip Girl on Episode 4 - Dan de Fleurette!

A Fine Frenzy - What I Wouldn't Do
From her new album "Bomb in a Birdcage", from which was probably taken from the lyrics of this song. What would we do without these female singers? Anyhow, I noticed that the female singers/groups like to use the hand clapping beat thing. It's here in this song, Au Revoir Simone uses it quite a bit as well. Love them.

X Factor UK #4 - a light hits the gloom on the gray

Passion Pit - I've Got Your Number
Less polished than their newer numbers, but shows how good they are nonetheless. It was prolly just a stepping stone to the success "Manners" is having right now.

have you seen me cryyyy/tears like diamonds

The Rifles - I Could Never Lie

And here's updates on X Factor UK!

Daniel Pearce singing Seal's Kiss From A Rose
he's so damn bloody good. but that's to be expected from someone who was from the boyband One True Voice, formed at the same time as Girls Aloud (of which Cheryl Cole is from, and is also one of the judges currently). However they disbanded, and he's here trying again. Put in just the right amount of emotion into the song, totally nailed it (in Simon's words). But it's a little unfair to the other contestants no?

Dominic Harris with Chris Brown's With You
He's got a pretty good voice, but somehow I feel R&B has a limited appeal in such a competition. Maybe it's just me.

Scott James with You Raise Me Up
He sang it with such passion, and this coming from a guy who's autistic and worked up immense courage to try for the auditions. Incredible. Very strong voice. Hope he goes far.

Amie Buck sings I'll Stand By You by Girls Aloud
She was given a second chance by Louis, and sang this song. She forgot some of the lyrics, but Cheryl Cole, ever the sweet one, chips in with some help and support. It's a damn feel good situation. Could hone her voice a bit more, and maybe she'll go far.

Curtis Moore singing Mario's Let Me Love You
He did some jail time, but found new direction - music. Simon likes him a lot, but he's got some attitude that he needs to change. I guess that comes with the age, he's only 16.

Simon: How do you think you did?
Curtis: Best I could have done.
Simon: Which is?
Curtis: What I just did.

It was pretty funny, but maybe it's the way he said it. hahah, I guess it doesn't go well with some people (particularly Simon).

omfg, i just found out Danyl Johnson, of Audition 1 has a band with his friend Nick Burrage. Check them out at their myspace. His voice is damn bloody good. I'm dead serious. Check them out now. I particularly love Beautiful Life and Give Me Your Hand.

The Saturday Mix #14 - today is saturday.

Oh dear me. it's the last Saturday of the month already. Anyway, on Monday, there's gonna be the end of month post, so look out for it!

I think I should be changing The Saturday Mix a bit. I'm gonna start posting remixes of songs and awesome dancier soongs. Sometimes there'd be the occasional house track. Think I sorta did that the last Saturday, so anyhow, here goes!

Arctic Monkeys - Dangerous Animals (The Raged Remix)
Here's the guys who brought you Brianstorm and their latest single(?) Crying Lightning. The original Dangerous Animals is here but I'm more or less neutral towards it.

OH MY GOD. the start to this remix, SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE ANOTHER SONG AND I CAN'T PUT A NAME TO THE SONG. MY HEAD BLANKED OUT, SOMEONE HELP ME OUT. there's the lyrics "i'll never find you"

Passion Pit - The Reeling (Shuttle's Super Club Mega Mix '99)
New boys who've come rocking into electronic town has Shuttle to call their own. Nate Donmoyer who plays the drums, IS Shuttle! This "self-remix" is good stuff. Frenchkiss Records has got gold in their hands. First Passion Pit, and now The Antlers.

The Raged - Home Experiment
There's no lyrics, but hell this doesn't take away the awesomeness in this song.

Shakira - She Wolf (Calvin Harris Remix)
I heard She Wolf somewhere, can't remember. Then I chanced upon this Calvin Harris remix, and it's made the song way more suited for the dancefloor. Makes the original very muted after listening to this. And I don't really fancy the pseudo wolf howling in the original.

John Legend - Everybody Knows (RAC Remix)
Those who haven't listened to the MSTRKRFT song Heartbreaker featuring John Legend should really go listen to it now. And here's the original Everybody Knows. And this song is indeed dope.

deadmau5 - Faxing Berlin

Empire of the Sun - We Are The People
the scent of lemon, drips from your eyes/we are the people who rule the world

Sunday, July 12, 2009

The Saturday Mix #7 - i'll write you harmony in C

Oh boy, this came in a bit late, but IT'S NEVER TOO LATE FOR GOOD MUSIC. So, here's THE SATURDAY MIX!

Passion Pit - Moth's Wings

Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova - Falling Slowly

Moscow Olympics - Still
A really awesome song from a band from Phillipines. Totally aced it. The guitars and synths were superb.

Moscow Olympics - Second Trace
Just watch the video on fullscreen mode. I found myself drifting and being absorbed by the song playing in the background and this fan made video. If you had to listen to one song, it's this. The video just takes it all. Serious.

Delta Spirit - Trashcan

Shiny Toy Guns - Chemistry of a Car Crash
Probably one of their more mainstream sounding songs.

Metric - Sick Muse
