The Saturday Mix #43

And "The Saturday Mix" is back and ready to throw out some fine rerubs of the latest songs out there.

Feist - Sea Lion (Chromeo Remix)

Marina and the Diamonds - Oh No!

Marina and the Diamonds - Oh No! (Grum Remix)
Less grrl power and rahrah than the original, but way more oomph.

Cullen - Easily Impressed (Calling In Sick Remix)
That's some wicked, ditty, deep in the deep bass intro.

HURTS - Wonderful Life (Mantronix Remix)

The xx - Shelter (Flinch Dubstep Remix)

The xx - Crystalised (Andy Murphy remix)
Said to be one of the best DJs Down Under, he runs his fingers through ATS favourites The xx's Crystalised. Awesome ear-pounding solid beat that stamps it's mark on the song.

they tried to stay in from the cold and wind

My cat does not know me when we meet a block away from home, and I gather from his expression that I’m not supposed to know him, either.

- Guy Davenport in The Geography of the Imagination

Feist - Gatekeeper
Read a book by the fireside, drinking a nice warm cuppa while a light snow's going on outside. That's what this song is.

French Horn Rebellion - Broken Heart
Extremely cute and fun song/video which sees them doing random dance stuff, not helped by another random guy "jacking off" a mustard sauce bottle and subsequently with an extra tomato sauce bottle. Totally in the vein of the other video for the song Up All Night. Very preppish pop fun. I like the bandana, makes him look like some old school comic character.

Feist and Ben Gibbard - Train Song
Brilliant cover of Vashti Bunyan's classic. Ben Gibbard is frontman of The Postal Service and husband of Zooey Deschanel.

the tragedy starts from the very first spark

Feist - The Water
The wistful voice of Feist, drawn out and hollow at times, I think she sings of desolation. Like how "the harbor becomes the sea/and light in the house keeps it collision free" reflects the solitary light emitting from the lighthouse that sweeps across the vast sea, which is also described as "not knowing it's dangerous size"; also "watching the gray sky that's acting like a good guy". The background piano complements the entire mood of the song perfectly.

Feist - Let It Die
The title song from her 2004 album, it already shows how immensely talented she is. Jazz elements which are not really present in her 2007 album "The Reminder" shows her masterful grasp of several genres. A very straightforward song about break up and it's aftermath.

Beck & Charlotte Gainsbourg - Heaven Can Wait
The daughter of British actress and singer Jane Birkin (who the Hermes Birkin was named after) and French singer-songwriter, actor and director Serge Gainsbourg. Classy song which features Beck strongly. Almost reminds me of the duet Rachael Yamagata did with Ray LaMontagne, except that their styles are quite different. Quirky and upbeat video by the way. Watch it.

Four Tet - She Just Likes To Fight
Beauty in simplicity. No over the top hooks or riffs, deep bass beats or resonating reverbs whatever. Wonderful piece by Kieran Hebden. Sit back and enjoy.

The Saturday Mix #25 - you caught me under false pretense

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Higher Than the Stars (Saint Etienne Visits Lord Spank Mix)
Pretty long band name plus 2 collabs on the remix = what a mouthful this title is. Very slow version, almost fit for ballroom dancing.

Muse - Supermassive Black Hole (Emre B Remix)
The remix at times tends to overwhelm the song, but overall pretty decent remix.

Miike Snow - Black & Blue (Jaymo & Andy George Remix)

Feist - My Moon My Man (Boys Noize Classic Remix)
I had never ever expected there to be a remix of such a song! It's like does Rachael Yamagata have a remix? Maybe I should go check it out and see if there's a remix of her. This is really cool, probably Alexander Ridha (Boys Noize is just his stage name) running his voice through the vocoder to give that "My Moon My Man" backdrop beat. FUNKY! And he doesn't ruin the original at that, it's more intertwined, giving My Moon My Man an alternative life as a dance song. It's a real pleasant surprise.

Two Door Cinema Club - I Can Talk (Crystal Fighters Remix)
Remember them? Here's a Crystal Fighters remix.

Passion Pit- Sleepyhead (LOL Boys Remix)
I don't like the first 2 minutes of the song, where they just added in stuff for the sake of doing so. The portion where the remix was done on the song was so much better. It would suffice if you cut the first 2 minutes off.

MSTRKRFT - Heartbreaker (feat. John Legend) (Laidback Luke Remix)
Dutch maestro Luke van Scheppingen gives his spin on this MSTRKRFT favourite.

Feist - 1234
she's such a wonderful singer. She denied Avril Lavigne every single award that AL was nominated in at the 2008 Juno Awards. it speaks volumes about how good she is.

Broken Social Scene - 7/4 (Shoreline)
of which Feist is a part of, providing the vocals obviously.

O+S - Permanent Scar
Part Orenda Fink of Azure Ray and part Cedric Lemoyne (bassist for Remy Zero) who's her long time friend. Curiously, she's married to Todd Fink of The Faint, who featured in this post.
