my pockets hang out like two surrender flags

Well, back from St. Vincent's performance. Annie Clark and her partner-in-music, Daniel Hart, were simply brilliant. I would have led the standing ovation had I not been trying to take pictures as she was leaving since getting a picture was so hard with the eagle-eyed personnel who were making sure they'd approach anyone who were taking photos to tell them to not do so. So firstly, I didn't expect such a lithe and tall singer as Annie Clark strode in and with all the equipment lying around, I thought she had a band tagging along with her, but was surprised to see only Daniel.

We were greeted with a simple hello and she proceeded with The Strangers. Seeing her go all jangly and fuzzy with the electric guitar, while at times strumming wistfully was an odd juxtaposition to Daniel's masterful performance with the violin. One would have expected a reversal of roles in a more 'traditional' or stereotypical pairing, but the duo were anything but. I couldn't help but notice that both of them had an array of whatnots they had to fiddle with, be it the pedals, knobs etc. What was in front of us, or rather who, were two immensely talented people, vocally led by Annie Clark. As the night wore on, she warmed up to the crowd, engaging us with ease. Definitely treating us to a wonderful performance, she displayed such finesse on the guitar, almost seeming like a dancer as she moved back and forth 'tap dancing' on the pedals. It takes two to tango, and tango she did, not only with the pedals but Daniel too. His violin a perfect foil to her guitar, almost antithetical, as haunting strings moulded a perfect atmosphere where these two take centrestage and shine.

Introducing Just The Same But Brand New, she recounted her inspiration for this song, where her friend told her about an elderly New York socialite who wanted her new home renovated, BUT all the furniture has to be exactly the same as that of the old apartment. To much laughter from the audience, she said she liked the story for 3 reasons, the first being it was absolutely cool, the next was that the woman must have been bonkers, and the last was something I can't remember. Turning to look at Daniel almost conspiratorially, they burst into smiles. As she sang, with such exquisite panache, I was left thinking that I didn't want the night to end, as did many others I'm sure.

When she set down her guitar and sat herself at the piano, it only served to remind us how wonderfully talented this woman is, as she broke into "marry me john, marry me john, i'll be so good to you". A love song yet a lonesome ballad, she croons "I'm as fickle as a paper doll being kicked by the wind/when I touch down again I'll be in someone else's arms". Reaching the part where she goes "We'll do what Mary and Joseph did/Without the kid" there was yet more laughter, to which she paused and quipped that she likes it when people giggle instead of awkward silence, kinda shows that people get it. It's instances like these, that she endears herself to the audience and makes the performance all the more fantastic. She indulged us in a couple more songs and just before Black Rainbow, she mentioned that it would be her last song and that she too didn't want it to end and the possibility of turning it into a slumber party. Talking to us for a few more minutes and thanking us for being such wonderful audiences (plus many other superlatives), she finally started her song. Of course, she had to come back after raucous shouts of encore and clapping, treating us to the final song of the night before bowing off stage to rapturous applause, and some standing ovations.

Beneath that seemingly fragile veneer is actually a talented woman who graduated from supporting Sufjan Stevens to making it out on her own - Sufjan must be very proud of her. St. Vincent single-handedly made our nights, the performance was worth every penny and more. Brilliant showmanship, and at times eccentric with her spasmodic movements, the ebb and flow of her music, varied by distorted guitaring/electronic violin-ing and melancholic plucking/haunting strings, her full array of talents on display and leaving everyone in utter awe of a marvellous performance.

Sorry for the poor photos, couldn't look into the viewfinder to set the photo and pretty much couldn't use flash too so I had to set for long shutter.

The setlist for St. Vincent's 7.30pm performance is as follows.

The Strangers
Save Me From What I Want
Actor Out of Work
Jesus Saves, I Spend
Just The Same But Brand New
The Party
Dig A Pony (The Beatles Cover)
Marry Me
The Bed
Black Rainbow
Marrow
Encore: These Days (Jackson Browne Cover)

sick of dressing like a human when i'm feeling like a leopard

Kings of Convenience - Winning A Battle, Losing The War
Exquisite song about either unrequited love or deep friendship, but I'm thinking more the former. These two guys are such excellent musicians with superb lyricism, oh how I envy them.

St. Vincent - Marrow
The distorted guitars when she sings "H-E-L-P, help me, help me" is a brilliant touch to the song.

Harlem Shakes - Strictly Game
Soooo upbeat and fun. The video stumped me initially, I was wondering why everyone was saying it's such a brilliant idea, before I realised that it wasn't a photo stream in a video, it was them keeping still and being filmed - you can see the slight movements in some of them. Totally unexpected but creative as hell, I think the director of the video got his inspiration from many user uploaded vids of songs, where it starts with the song title and band name, and the rest would be just a million of the band's photos until the end.

Dooey Decibel - Summer Underwear (mp3)
With a name like that, his songs had better be fun. And he doesn't disappoint. A medley of electronic sounds and guitar, he melds one fine cutesy song that's a little high on the sugar level. I reckon it would fit well in any animation video, or even a stop motion video.

February is a pretty quiet month. But March would have been quiet too, if not for the Mosaic Music Festival. I'm pretty excited about all the upcoming concerts, but being the extremely poor person that I am, I have to ration my cash and be selective in the bands I wanna see. So, I'm watching Muse at Big Night Out 2010, Florence + the Machine and The xx, Au Revoir Simone, St. Vincent and Kings of Convenience. Still deciding about Shugo Tokumaru though.

50 Favourite Songs of 2009: Part V

Miike Snow - Animal
I think opinion was pretty polarised on this one, but right here where Animal is coming off the speakers, I'm pretty hooked on this track. Swedish pop at it's best, slick/sleek arrangements by Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg and catchy, fun lyrics by vocalist Andrew Wyatt. While I'm going "bounce, bounce", I'm pretty sure this will get stuck in at least half of the heads that listen to it.

Friendly Fires - Skeleton Boy
This one here is a bit dodgy. No, not the quality but rather whether it actually is a 2009 track. Technically, the album was released in 2008, however, it was re-released in 2009 and also featured a reworked Skeleton Boy. So I figured, what the heck.

”I close my eyes on the dancefloor/forget about you./I lose myself in flashing colors/I’ve got to see it through” Beginning with this, you know this is gonna be a fun ride. There's the bleeps and bops, immensely catchy lyrics in short cuts (why do I sound like I'm repeating what I said for Miike Snow's Animal), electro drum beats, plus such an awesome video which the guys over at current say isn't all too original. Sorry folks, but it sure seems original and interesting to me. Don't stop yourself from filling the air with this light dancey number. Get going!

St. Vincent - Actor Out of Work
Just hitting the halfway mark of the 3rd minute, Actor Out of Work might seem short, but boy is it brimming with energy and pace. The intense drums and the fuzzy guitaring drives the song, as much as her beautiful vocals - don't the oooh oooh oooh's sound so nice? But what takes the cake is the magnificent orchestration at the end using the horns, drum and guitar. Don't you feel it's almost like taking an awesome ride at the amusement park that ends as soon as it started, and you want to take it again and again? Well, this certainly feels like that, no doubt due to the fast pace of the song.

White Lies - Unfinished Business
Unfinished Business manages to show McVeigh's extended range of vocals for what I feel is him at his best. The lyrics tell a story, of betrayal and forgiveness, as a woman murders a man (presumably the husband) and he comes back as a ghost to haunt her but realises he's still in love with her. All he wants is to forget that she murdered him, and to be with her again. His voice is powerful and suited to the dark but brilliant lyrics, and unwittingly sends shivers up my spine. I think he'd sound fantastic live.

White Rabbits - Percussion Gun
Well for those expecting something else, it sounds just like what the title says. First off, you have two people playing the drums (at least in the video), and there's the disturbingly enchanting pounding of the lower octaves of the piano. It's a flurry of activity, fast and furious which stirs up the atmosphere and I wouldn't be surprised finding myself in the 60s Sicily, with two rival mafia gangs having an intense face off.

One For The Team - Best Supporting Actress
Sweet and melodious acoustic indie pop. It feels so charming and certainly not out of place at a bonfire with a group of friends listening to them playing. Lovely lyrics and vocals, clear strumming of the guitar. It's really no frills, just honest singing and awesome stuff from the rest of the team.

I know I said I would miss you
But now I think i'll make a mess of you

Get this free from their label which was incidentally founded by Ian Anderson, their vocalist.

Florence + the Machine - Dog Days Are Over
Don't you think Dog Days Are Over has a soul of it's own? It's as if it has wings and would spread them anytime and take off. Her strong vocals resonate as their scale enormous heights. The supporting cast does a brilliant job of supplementing her vocals in this piece, as it takes you through all the cork screws and double cork screws and even the 360s before settling you for a straight (coinciding with the soft lull) before it springs you with yet another trip through those twist and turns. She's really impressive and indeed, this song takes you on a whirlwind ride which is both a delight and joy.

Btw, she's coming here (to Singapore) with The xx. Get your tickets if you haven't!

The Low Anthem - Charlie Darwin
Breathy vocals that permeate the dreamy soundscape which engulfs you while the slow acoustic strums accompany the chorus as this magic slowly unfolds. Eerie and taut while the lyrics reek of despair "Spooning water from the broken vessels/As far as I can see there is no land", it belies the lyrical depth later in "Lords of war just profit from decay/And trade the children's promise for the jingle". Absolute stunner of a track.

Atlas Sound - Quick Canal (feat. Laetitia Sadier)
Bradford Cox certainly knows his way with music. This song is really wonderful, almost lugubrious. Aurally, it's soothing via the use of the keyboard, and Laetitia certainly has that sort of lush voice which envelops you entirely. A kaleidoscope of sounds, at times foggy, at times hazy, at times lush and full, it fills the space you're in. I really really like this song, and it's highly recommended that you take a listen, and you won't even feel like 8 minutes has passed after listening to the song.

Headlights - Get Going
Light acoustic strumming of the guitar coupled with wistful vocals, certainly got me going. A tad short for such an awesome track, but still love it all the same.

And so, this marks the end of a pretty long and fun journey, anyhow here are my 50 favourite tracks for 2009 as a new decade beckons in less than 2 days time. It definitely heralds more good music in the coming year and decade, while the lines of mainstream and indie is looking to be blurred, evidenced by the mainstream movie New Moon (Twilight Saga) with their indie soundtrack. Enjoy.

i refuse to let anyone through

Ok, the poll has closed BUT there's only 3 votes. Maybe I should have never started the poll in the first place. HAHA!

I don't know whether this counts as an attempt at a Christmas Eve playlist, but I tried! It's really just a mish-mash of whatever songs I'm listening to.

Acrylics - All Of The Fire

Bon Iver & St. Vincent - Roslyn

Tycho - Coastal Brake
This is just brilliant. Take my word for it.

Local Natives - Airplanes

Great Lake Swimmers - Stealing Tomorrow
Beautiful song, really really wonderful. Well crafted, apt use of strumming to create the mood, and certainly the excellent vocals as well.

Sufjan Stevens - Joy To The World
This is obviously the most Christmas-y song there is here, rather, the only Christmas-y song. Should check out his new album "The BQE", which is a mixed-medium artistic exploration of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

Note: I'll be doing a favourite songs/albums list. I won't and can't do a ranked list because I'm still not discerning enough.

in the sky the birds are pulling rain

Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Killers are coming down to Singapore, with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs having sold out their tickets and The Killers almost running out. But but but, that's not all.

It appears that The xx and Florence & The Machine are still headed down to Singapore despite the cancellation of St. Jerome's Laneway Festival according to an article in the Today newspaper. Anyhow, look at this. Go here. Right click the page and "View Source" or "View Page Source", you can see a Singapore link right at the bottom set of links (but it's not working, it just redirects you back to the same page), amongst the other Australian cities.

Also, I just found out that the Mosaic Music Festival held at The Esplanade is gonna have a whole host of acts that will make this festival to die for, especially these 3 acts that I'm looking out for, namely Kings of Convenience, Shugo Tokumaru and St. Vincent. I'm so excited!

Florence & the Machine - You've Got The Love (The xx Remix)
You've got the love, you've got the loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Shugo Tokumaru - Green Rain
This is what one guy commented "It's pretty amazing how subtly the song changes from 7/8 to 6/8. That's why the verse is so unsettling and jumpy and the chorus section flows so well." The only thing I know about 7/8 or 6/8 is that it's some time thingy to do with the beats, but other than that, I'm clueless. But I don't have to know that to like this song. Shugo is very creative, overflowing with those juices really. Listen to his songs, the first thing that came to my mind was really of him painting with his music as the paint.

Kings of Convenience - Toxic Girl
The lyrics totally remind me of the latest How I Met Your Mother Episode "The Window".

"You're waiting in the shadows for a chance
because you believe at heart, that if you can"

Kings of Convenience are superb. And so is Kings of Leon. Anymore Kings coming up?

in case of rapture

St. Vincent - Actor Out Of Work
You're a liar and that's the truth/You're an extra, lost in the scene

very interesting lyrics indeed. the video was very artfully done, wonderful. the last part where the man suddenly stops crying totally capped the whole video sweetly.

St. Vincent is essentially Annie Clark, and Annie Clark herself. She cut her second album "Actor", from which this song was taken from.

St. Vincent - Laughing With a Mouth of Blood
Ok, to me, this song probably isn't the best she has out there, but the lyrics certainly struck me as sharp and telling a story. Maybe after a few listens, one may start to like it, but what took to me was the lyrics! from what it seems, it's about an abused wife, running away, and trading everything she has, for less. (or more, so to speak)

As Tall As Lions - Maybe I'm Just Tired

Magic Wands - Kiss Me Dead
