It's been a long road, 2009 was a bumper year for music, with so many fantastic albums being churned out by bands, but I won't be going into that. There will be more of that in the month to come, as I might be reviewing albums and songs of this year. That said, I'll be discussing releases for next year, whether some bands are going to live up to their billing, what we could be looking forward to etc.
Here's a couple I'm looking forward to.
Vampire Weekend - Contra (12 Jan)
First up, there's New York indie rockers Vampire Weekend with sophomore effort "Contra". Their much fancied self-titled debut album received rave reviews, and stand out tracks included Oxford Comma and A-Punk. This is what some people said,
Rolling Stone: On their debut, Vampire Weekend mostly earn points the old-fashioned way: by writing likable songs you'll be glad to revisit next month.
The Guardian: Behind the penny loafers and songs about commas, there's a bold band that can balance dextrous originality with an innate pop sensibility.
Boston Globe: At its best, Vampire Weekend takes the exceedingly familiar template of indie rock and invigorates it with a chiming guitar sound that suggests the band has been spending its downtime browsing afropop.org.
Personally, I quite liked the fresh and preppy feel, and it was injected with so much fun. And with Horchata, also available as a free download at their official site, their sophomore effort is really one to look out for.
Beach House - Teen Dream (25 Jan)
Victoria Legrand (fresh off her collaboration with Grizzly Bear on Slow Life, off the soundtrack of Twilight: New Moon) and Alex Scally present to us "Teen Dream". Also included is the single Used To Be released in Oct 2008 and the leaked track Norway that has gotten many raving about their third outing. And I take back what I said previously "I don't actually always pick out their songs to particularly listen to". They're nearly on constant rotation right now. Peachy!
Beach House Norway
OK go - Of the Blue Colour of the Sky (12 Jan)
OK go of Here It Goes Again fame (remember the treadmill video?), is back with a new album titled "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky", taken from the book The Influence of the Blue Ray of the Sunlight and of the Blue Color of the Sky, about how illness can be cured by blue light.
OK go - Skyscrapers
Spoon - Transference (19 Jan)
How exciting is this, Spoon's new album after their 2007 awesome release "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga". I'm pretty ooshed just thinking about their new album.
Los Campesinos! - Romance Is Boring (26 Jan)
Los Campesinos! - There Are Listed Buildings
Lifehouse - Smoke and Mirrors (2 Feb)
Lifehouse - Halfway Gone
Hot Chip - One Life Stand (8 Feb)
With dancefloor hits Ready For The Floor and One Pure Thought, the slow groove Over and Over, I'm all set for "One Life Stand".
Hot Chip - Alley Cats (Live)
Shearwater - The Golden Archipelago (End Feb)
Frightened Rabbit - The Winter of Mixed Drinks (Early Mar)
A few others, such as "Congratulations" by MGMT, un-named albums by Secondhand Serenade, Panic! At The Disco and a couple more, are to be released in first quarter of 2010.
Note: I apologise for the sloppy post, been a bit busy with stuff.

you stood out, like knots on old, walked-on wood
All Wrong and the Plans Change - I Get Down
This song is so full of girlish sweetness. All Wrong and the Plans Change is essentially Kassia Conway on vocals, bass and acoustic, while best friend Amy Wood is on the drums. Like they say, along the way the plans (might) have changed, but the music keeps coming. That's the spirit girls, love your stuff! Visit their official site for a free download and more on them.
Beni - Maximus
The small little kid, I reckon not more than 6 years old?, has dope dance moves. Totally sweet.
Riot in Belgium - La Musique
It's a real riot!
The Black Atlantic - Walked-on Wood
The Black Atlantic is a Groningen (The Netherlands) based acoustic pop band formed around singer and songwriter Geert van der Velde, former frontman for American metalcore group Shai Hulud. Listening to them immediately brings to mind Bon Iver and The Antlers in terms of the sound, but Fleet Foxes when it comes to the multi-instrumentalism. Very beautiful song, and fitting that these songs from the album "Reverence for Fallen Trees" were recorded in a log cabin. Sounds familiar?

The Saturday Mix #26
Two Door Cinema Club - I Can Talk (Crystal Fighters Remix)
Chew Lips - Salt Air (Plastician Remix)
Chew Lips - Salt Air (Jupiter Remix)
I wonder which of the two do you guys think is better. My dollar is on Jupiter's remix.
Crystal Fighters - I Love London (In Flagranti Vintage Mix)
Ooh, I totally dig this remix. It's funky, swashbuckling and unrestrained. And that "doooh" sound, what instrument makes that sound? the keyboard?
Magic Wands - Black Magic (Crystal Fighters Remix)
More Crystal Fighters. They're pretty deft at churning out dancefloor stuff.
Chromeo - Night by Night
Canadian artists Chromeo present you Night by Night. And here's what they have to say about this track, "It's both more disco and more classic rock than our previous stuff. It's also the first time we try singing falsetto. We wanted a powerful, heroic track designed to provoke pelvic thrusting, coupled with sensitive lyrics about the fragility of relationships. Oh, and we had to get some talkbox in there, too. This was produced using nothing but analog gear in our new Montreal studio, and mixed in Paris by our cohort Philippe Zdar over the summer. With love, always."
Chromeo - Night by Night (Skream Remix)
This is good stuff by Skream.

a moment that is frozen as we hang in time
Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire
This song is the first single from their second album, "In Ghost Colours". Delectable electropop is their way, and this song makes good on that. Do i hear a sax in the background?
The Decemberists - Shiny
Sounds very carnival-ish, but deep down, it's a pure romantic song. Can always count on The Decemberists to come up with witty or meaningful stuff.
Orenda Fink - That Certain-Something Spring
Her songs are always so beautiful, and this delivers just as well. A very lulling voice and simple plucking of the guitar may seem like nothing, but it's this barebones way, that makes this song so alluring. Very contemplative lyrics as well.
Restless hearts, do they come with youth or age?
Now here we are, just trying to fill a page
Just trying to fill a page
Crystal Fighters - I Love London
There's this mad infectious beat, it makes the dance wanna course through your veins. This is bad ass. Just the video itself, you're already seeing one crazy half-wonked girl dancing on the streets, don't know if it could be considered dancing though, she's just madly throwing her body and moving her feet. That said, this song is pure dope.
I <3 LONDON!

i should be floating but i'm weighted by thinking
Animal Collective - What Would I Want? Sky
An AC track on their latest EP "Fall Be Kind". Having released the critically acclaimed "Merriweather Post Pavillion" at the start of this year, it is only fitting that they end it with a bang. Not so much a bang per se, but you get what I mean. Amid all that cymbals and electronic, lies a flower waiting to bloom, or a caterpillar metamorphosising into a butterfly, waiting to emerge from it's cocoon. It's not abrupt, more gradual, as the electronica gives way to Panda Bear's vocals accompanied by a bass-y drumbeat. It's here, where the butterfly breaks free ready for it's first time at flight. A wonderful song, beautiful and evocative. It could have been on MPP or stood strong on it's own, but either way, it's a wonderful way for AC to end the year.
Asobi Seksu - Thursday
Asobi Seksu - Thursday (Acoustic)
I totally love this acoustic version.
It seems you lost your way
You've let it all fall apart
Nothing's left here but you
All you do is remind me
Now that we've lost our way
The rest can all fall apart
All I see here is you
All it does is remind me
Such bittersweet lyrics and sublime melodies, belted out by Yuki's beautiful voice.
French Horn Rebellion - Up All Night
This is so fun! The slight falsetto is fitting, keyboards (MGMT style) providing a light backdrop to a streetside video.

you've done nothing at all to make me love you less
The Golden Filter - Favourite Things
HAHAHA this is the most air-headed song I've ever heard. Totally no substance to the extent of being funny. All it does is talk about favourite things such as, vintage dress, vodka, whiskey, Paris and London. The beat is pretty catchy though.
The Golden Filter - Hide Me
Oh jeez, what destructive lust and passion. The whole house was nearly torn apart, and they hadn't even started. Only to be caught by family(?) just as they were about to. Hahaha. The high pitch and oft breathless voice is pretty suited for this song, and awesome synths.
Barcelona - Come Back When You Can
Nice slow rock song. Contrary to what I(or you) thought, Barcelona is a band from Seattle, Washington. Their sound is harmonious and piano-based with elements of rock. I was thinking they sounded a bit like Explosions in the Sky, if you don't count the lyrics.
Muse - MK Ultra
Very deep lyrics, what with unnatural laws and the universe being trapped inside a tear.

and i looked in her eyes and left her
The Swimmers - Shelter
A very sweet song plus a quirky little video. Very personal, this song seems to expose them at their most vulnerable, making them the humans we all are.
Caribou - Hello Hammerheads
I thought I was actually listening to a Shearwater plus Fleet Foxes collaboration. But this is Caribou aka Daniel Snaith. Very contemplative lyrics, backed by that folksy, melancholic voice plus simple acoustic plucking. A small nugget of information - he has a PhD in Mathematics from Imperial College London. But that's no wonder, considering his father is a mathematics professor at the University of Sheffield and his sister is a reader in mathematics at the University of Bristol.
The Temper Trap - Soldier On
A little Temper Trap for all. Very beautiful and might I add, enchanting voice.
Beach House - Norway
From their 2010 album "Teen Dreams". I don't actually always pick out their songs to particularly listen to, but whenever I listen to a random playlist with their songs in it, I never fail to love the song. They're fantastic, Alex and Victoria. Oh, and Victoria is providing vocals for Grizzly Bear in Slow Life for the New Moon OST.

The Saturday Mix #25 - you caught me under false pretense
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Higher Than the Stars (Saint Etienne Visits Lord Spank Mix)
Pretty long band name plus 2 collabs on the remix = what a mouthful this title is. Very slow version, almost fit for ballroom dancing.
Muse - Supermassive Black Hole (Emre B Remix)
The remix at times tends to overwhelm the song, but overall pretty decent remix.
Miike Snow - Black & Blue (Jaymo & Andy George Remix)
Feist - My Moon My Man (Boys Noize Classic Remix)
I had never ever expected there to be a remix of such a song! It's like does Rachael Yamagata have a remix? Maybe I should go check it out and see if there's a remix of her. This is really cool, probably Alexander Ridha (Boys Noize is just his stage name) running his voice through the vocoder to give that "My Moon My Man" backdrop beat. FUNKY! And he doesn't ruin the original at that, it's more intertwined, giving My Moon My Man an alternative life as a dance song. It's a real pleasant surprise.
Two Door Cinema Club - I Can Talk (Crystal Fighters Remix)
Remember them? Here's a Crystal Fighters remix.
Passion Pit- Sleepyhead (LOL Boys Remix)
I don't like the first 2 minutes of the song, where they just added in stuff for the sake of doing so. The portion where the remix was done on the song was so much better. It would suffice if you cut the first 2 minutes off.
MSTRKRFT - Heartbreaker (feat. John Legend) (Laidback Luke Remix)
Dutch maestro Luke van Scheppingen gives his spin on this MSTRKRFT favourite.

don't want nothing but the callousness i had
Two Door Cinema Club - I Can Talk
Two doors but three people with the help of technology and a thirst for anything quirky. This electropop outfit utilises catchy lyrics and riffs, overloading you in the chorus with "Now I can talk/No one gets off". But when you hear things like "It's hard to compromise/When I see through your eyes", you know they aren't as flippant as they seem to be. Anyhow, it's more like they are just having fun making music, quite evident from the whole mood of the song. Uplifting riffs and outrageous use of the electronica makes for quite the recipe.
Two Door Cinema Club - Something Good Can Work
Here's another highly enjoyable piece from them.
There's a spanner in the works, you know/You gotta step up your game to make it to the top
Chew Lips - Salt Air
Chew Lips - Slick
This song is so totally ripe for dancing. Could break into a dance any moment. I love Tig's vocals. It's clear and crisp, could be better than La Roux. Both La Roux and Chew Lips are fronted by pretty interesting women, strong personalities. I'm so in love with their brand of dance-pop. It's really really really really danceable. The synths and keyboards complement her voice very nicely, wrapping around her vocals which is the main driving force of their songs. Chew Lips are vocalist Tigs, and multi-instrumentalists Will Sanderson and James Watkins.

Fool's Gold - Surprise Hotel(mp3)
The link is a free download on last.fm.
Fool's Gold quotes various forms of African music (specifically Congolese, Ethiopian, Eritrean and Malian), Krautrock, and 80s dance influenced pop music as their major influence. This is quite evident right from the get go, the playfulness of the guitars and what sounds like the flute in the background. Other than the guitar and drums, they play, get ready for this, a beautiful array of hand-made instruments including: Ewe, Gungon and Djembe skinned drums; Gankogui, Bananna bells and claves; Kashishi, nut-rattles, goat-toe rattles, Chekeres, Axatse shell gourds and an over-sized tambourine Mizhar bought on the street in Cairo, Egypt. What a mouthful!
The Polyamorous Affair - New York City
The track in question is New York City pulled from their album "Bolshevik Disco", so click play at the top right hand box. Reminiscent of retro disco, complete with thumping electronic synths, this is pure decadence and lush melodies, nothing short of what you'd expect from glam-pop harkening from the 70s and 80s. They generally have quite short songs, ranging from 2:30 to 3:30, but this is slightly longer at 4:01. The Polyamorous Affair consists of singer/songwriter/producer, Eddie Chacon and the seductive front woman Sissy Sainte-Marie. Escape into a world of fantasies and soak up the "inspired dance beats of Giorgio Moroder and the raw sexuality of Serge Gainsbourg’s collaborations with vixens, Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot, plus a twist of Marc Bolan-esque hooks and Goldfrapp’s technological pagan naturist ways." (as said on last.fm) This husband and wife duo(remember Handsome Furs) are definitely one to keep on your playlist and radar.
autoKratz - Stay The Same
More of this English duo for you - tight synths and palpitating beats. Does the video remind you of Röyksopp?

nobody told me forgetting could be so hard
Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway
I've gotta say I'm surprised this song didn't get more listens. It's a bit like a slow-dancing ballad, but with the drums. And what a creative video, BEP are certainly good at their stuff. They are really good at making very very catchy beats and lyrics.
Via Tania - Wonder Stranger
Born in Australia to South African parents, Tania Bowers began playing with her sister Kim in noise-pop outfit "Spdfgh" around Sydney in the early 90s. Subsequently after their break up, she embarked on her own solo project, moving to Chicago. She started work on her first album, with producer Casey Rice (who's also her husband) and various Chicago musical luminaries, with a focus on production, electronics and sound, and the songs acting as vessel for said sounds. This resulted in her debut album "Under a Different Sky" which received critical acclaim, and thereafter, there was a new direction for her second album "Moon Sweet Moon", from which this song was taken from.
Barzin - Nobody Told Me
One of the few male singer/songwriters, he reminds me a bit of Mayer Hawthorne, but more stripped down. Maybe more Ray LaMontagne with the lyrics, the melancholy and introspectiveness, but definitely different voice altogether.

Espers - Caroline
Nice haunting folksy sound. Caroline reminds me of the main character of "Dollhouse", whose name before she was brain-wiped was Caroline and subsequently renamed Echo, which has been dropped recently halfway through season 2. But Fox has been nice to the viewers by letting it complete its run, unlike some others such as "The Beautiful Life", from which the plug has been pulled completely.
One For The Team - Questions and Panthers
Penguin Prison - Animal Animal
Peaches - Show Stopper

Fuck Buttons - The Lisbon Maru
Hell, I didn't know what the song title means, but a simple wiki turned this up. Lisbon Maru was a Japanese freighter which was used as a troopship and prisoner-of-war transport between China and Japan. I don't know whether it was drawn from this, but this song has awesome bass. I feel fantastic just listening to it.
Fuck Buttons - Surf Solar
Well, as one user put it, fookin choooon mate!!
choon:
A song or any piece of music to which an individual assigns the highest level of merit but most usually an exclamation upon hearing the song in public.
"Bohemian Rhapsody! CHOON!"
Wolf Gang - The King And All Of His Men
This is all I can glean on him. Wolf Gang is the stage name of Max McElligott from London, UK, son of a historian and a violinist and former student at the prestigious London School of Economics. Many say he sounds like Mika, and I won't deny he sounds like the Mika from "Life In Cartoon Motion".
autoKratz - Always More
Oh my. The synths are out of this world. It feels so surreal. autoKratz are a London based electronic duo comprising of David Cox and Russell Crank. This is definitely for the dancefloor - get it down. I love duos, somehow it's just two people making things work - a symphony of two. In this post alone, it's autoKratz and Fuck Buttons. There's also Handsome Furs, The Big Pink, Kings of Convenience, Röyksopp, Crystal Castles and Air France to name a few.

I cannot take it anymore, gotta start talking about music and more music, withdrawal syndrome was already setting in.
The Raveonettes - Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)
It's a pretty funky pop song laced with dark humour.
Muse - Unnatural Selection
The crests and troughs of this song, is typical Muse. Spells epic when heard live. Don't look back.
Delphic - This Momentary
Got this in my inbox, suggesting a listen on their stuff. Well done, it's totally awesome, pretty lo-fi combined with the pretty ethereal voice of James, not forgetting the wicked synths. It totally hooks you in. More on them: This 4 piece hailing from Manchester is definitely one to look out for, even featuring in Kitsuné Maison Compilation 8. They are Dan Hadley (drums), James Cook (vocals), Matt Cocksedge (guitar) and Richard Boardman (synths). Their debut album - Acolyte - is slated for released on 11th January 2010. By the way, kitschy video.
Delphic - Counterpoint
Late at night/I'll run through the streets and empty corridors/I'll find my counterpoint/inside a red room locked behind a door/Behind a door.
With such fantastic promo videos and superb singles, it's no wonder they are drumming up so much interest and certainly look promising to me.

Anyhow, Big Night Out seems to be an offshoot/copy/whatever of Big Day Out. If only half of the acts going to BDO would come for Big Night Out, that would be totally rockin' awesome. There's The Decemberists, Kasabian, Peaches, The Temper Trap, Mars Volta, Ladyhawke, Passion Pit, Calvin Harris, Lisa Mitchell, Simian Mobile Disco, Jet plus many more! If only half of those I listed would even come for Big Night Out, then it would be so worth it, although MUSE playing a full set is sweet enough.

life just ain't the same
I wanted to continue my updates on the latest from X Factor UK, but to my extreme disappointment and disgust, Lucie Jones has been booted out. While this is not the latest news (it was out early yesterday), the debate still rages on, as to why Simon chose to let it go to deadlock, which I think was pretty obvious that Lucie would be booted. I won't go into the details, but as a personal protest to Simon Cowell's dastardly act of cowardice (I personally think it's to protect his remaining 3 acts, and as much as I like them, what's this about keeping the horrible twosome in the show, which he claims is a singing competition?), I will stop updating on X Factor UK. And what were the voters thinking!?!?! How could Lucie receive the lowest number of votes? She was one of the most consistent performers, and one of the best each time I might add. Utterly disappointed. It's really bittersweet as well, I mean it's obvious that there's a good crop of contestants remaining in the competition, but how can anyone continue watching, knowing a really good singer has been booted out?
Lucie Jones singing Demi Lovato's This Is Me
A tribute to a fantastic singer who really should have gone all the way to the end, but instead faced early demise in the competition. The irony of what Simon said comments, is so stark to the decision he made on the day of results. If I were Lucie, i'd feel cheated, seeing how Simon actually agreed with Louis that she could be the last female contestant standing (ie. Stacey would be booted out first, seeing how there's only 2 females left). It's hypocritical really. And before this degrades into more ranting, let me give you guys some pretty good songs to listen to.
Maps - Everything Is Shattering
Nothing less is to be expected from Mercury Prize nominee in 2007, losing out to Klaxons. From his latest album "Turning the Mind" released about a month ago, this lush electropop song is fit for the airwaves. The latter part of the song sounds like part of a musical being run through a synthesizer, and you know what, i think this is a very good song to choreograph a dance to.
Anya Marina - Satellite Heart
This is a song off the New Moon soundtrack, and her voice is just beautiful. Totally pulling you into that voice of hers, it's quite a fitting song for the movie as well. Little tidbit: She DJs on one of the San Diego radio station's from monday to saturday, from 9am to 2pm.

but i'll just keep playing along
My friend actually introduced me to her music quite a while back, but I put it on the back burner for a while. A few days ago, I re-looked into her stuff, and I realised what I've actually been missing from this local gem. She was previously from rock band Allura which she fronted. I think this clearly presents to us her versatility, moving on to acoustic/electronic from rock. And I must say she's doing pretty well.
On first listen, she reminds me a lot of Priscilla Ahn. Her dulcet voice leaves something lingering while you listen to her songs. Her self released solo album, aptly titled "The Bedroom", as she recorded it in her bedroom, is a 4 track EP. It provides insights into what her music is like post-Allura. With gentle guitar arpeggios, and not afraid of using electronica, which was inspired by outfits such as Bjork and The Postal Service, coupled with her dynamism and versatile vocals, she melds all these into one easy to listen EP, which slowly grows on you as you start to appreciate her talents. Lead in track Rule The World utilises electronic beats quite generously to provide a gentle accompanying beat to a pretty song. The playful feel of this song isn't lost as well, as she sings of ruling the world and sharing the riches of the world, when it's just two of them - she and her loved one. When she sings of this lasting until they last till they are really old, you know she means it.
the pavements abound/looking to be found/and i'm cruising slowly
Aqueous Oblivion is purely stripped down to the basics, just the guitar and her. She exploits this fully, showcasing her abilities on the guitar and her vocals to the best she can.
Devotion In Reality delves deep into her past, musing about lost love. Of (broken) promises and heartbreak, you realise that this album could be about personal experiences. Well paced, with what sounds like a xylophone? in the background, the song slowly introduces you into her world, where the lack of lyrics mid song coincide with the opening to the door into that cosy, intimate world of hers and moves on, as if she's showing you around this wonderful place. I'm reminded of The Little Prince written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, where the title character lives in a really tiny world (actually an asteroid), which is just about as big a house could be.
With a title like Find Fix and Save, it screams vulnerability of the heart. The layering of the song using synths is evident, ala Imogen Heap, but she never deviates from the heart and soul of this EP - her voice and guitar - to carry the song, and I might say the EP to the great distance it is already going.
With cleverly crafted songs that tug at your heartstrings and please your ears, it's really hard to fault this EP. As she prepares to release her full length album at the end of this year, which I'm eagerly awaiting, we'll have to settle for these 4 songs. And interestingly, like the lyrics in Find Fix and Save, there is indeed an emptiness that lingers in me when I stop listening. It's that good. If I had to rate this EP, (I hate rating because it gives numbers to the song/album/whatever is. I prefer words, as it can evoke much more - be it good or bad.) I'd say 4.5/5.
Official Site
Essentially her official site is where you'd go to download her EP for free, otherwise it's just miscellaneous stuff. Get the whole thing right now, and immerse yourself in her voice, and don't forget to get on the Inch Chua ride, which is only gonna get better.

The Saturday Mix #24
Amanda Blank - Shame On Me
Amanda Blank aka Amanda Mallory sounds a tad too monotonous in this song, but the beats are definitely quite dancey, made even better in the remix below.
Amanda Blank - Shame On Me (Viking Remix)
Fool's Gold - Surprise Hotel (Mad Decent Remix)
Here's a little froggy lovin'. I mean I don't know what got into their heads, but it's pretty funny and funky at the same time. Like it or hate it, you gotta admit it's interesting - try picturing everyone dancing or hopping like frogs. HAHA!

This is some bad-ass psychedelic video. There's been mixed reviews about her debut solo outing, but I think this is pretty decent.

Do Make Say Think - Do
This is their myspace site and it features all 4 songs from their latest album "Other Truths". All 4 tracks are pretty epic in that they run at least 8 minutes. The one I particularly liked was Do. If you notice, they've got really neat guitars, stringing out pretty tight rhythms. They are more or less the driving force behind this song, you can feel it as the soul of the song while the powerful drums are the body.

Just trying to make it out on my own
very sweet mid tempo song. the harmonica in the background is quite the brilliant idea. brings a folksy feel to the song.

i been here so long my heart is a parking lot
Wavves - Weed Demon
white wave/white stains/weed cave/weed saves
succinct and to the point. just plain ol' strumming of the guitar plus drawn out voices that sing about weed.
Slaraffenland - Stars and Smiles
It's like a parade song, with a huge band playing and marching to it. A little acapella incorporated as well.
Wolf Parade - Language City
Wolf Parade - Shine A Light
Wolf Parade has been around since 2003, hailing from Montreal, Quebec. They comprise Dan Boeckner (vocals, guitar), Spencer Krug (vocals, keyboards), Arlen Thompson (drums), Dante DeCaro (guitar, bass, percussion) and Hadji Bakara (sound manipulation, keyboards). Notably, Dan Boeckner is the other half of Handsome Furs, the husband and wife duo, while Spencer Krug is part of Swan Lake and Sunset Rubdown. Quite tough huh, them juggling other outfits and all. But it's pretty much an outlet from their different music, where certain sounds do not fit in with the band's direction.
I like it how their songs don't sound polished, the noise and the roughness to their songs contribute to the core of the songs.

X Factor UK #10 - their shadows searching in the night
This week, being Rock Week, has seen the contestants come out guns ablazing trying to do their utmost in performing the quintessential of music - Rock.
Joe McElderry performs Journey's Don't Stop Believin'
He's emerging to be the front runner certainly, like I mentioned last week. Very very consistent, good vocals, in fact this time, there's some power in his voice which is quite unexpected from him. He did a pretty good rendition of a Journey song. Journey was huge in the late 1970s, even into the 1980s, and this very song Joe sang was their signature song. It is also the top-selling catalog track in iTunes history, at more than two million downloads (says wiki). And certainly, to do justice to such a huge song, would take some guts, lots of talent and a little luck, and I believe he had them all. To digress, Simon said something midway of Cheryl's comments, something about having to sit straight and she was quite puzzled. I think it had something to do with her (horrid) dress, two fans? covering her boobs? Like what?? But it really got me laughing - both the comments and the dress.
Lucie Jones with Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns 'N Roses
Likewise, who would have expected Lucie to being singing Sweet Child O' Mine. Yet another Californian rock band, with a huge rock staple (in my opinion). The judges were comparing her to Avril Lavigne and with that rock chick make up, she certainly did look the part, and bore some resemblance to the Canadian Grammy Award nominee. While I wasn't blown away by her performances, unlike some of her previous ones, she did make an impression in that she could sing more than just ballads or pop songs. There was conviction in her voice, you knew she was trying her best, and of course, nothing needs to be said about her vocals - it's one of the best in the competition - just whether she can sing a rock song the way it should.
Danyl Johnson singing Aerosmith's I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing
I was pretty taken aback when Simon mentioned something about Danyl being the most hated contestant and it being on the British papers/tabloids. I mean yes, he may seem cocky, but most hated? I guess people just need someone to hate, to take the brunt of the criticism, like in most competitions. But certainly, it's pretty obvious that he didn't come back stronger from his bottom two finish, like Rachel did, twice over too. For me, I didn't really like his first half, which was pretty much his own version of the Aerosmith song. It sounded odd and contrived. And there was something different in his eyes, I don't know. I mean if you asked me to choose, I would rather his cocky confident self (where he wouldn't rein himself in), versus a more subdued version of himself. Plus, this is Rock Week. Reining himself in would do him no good! That said, it's a real pity that he had to sing so damn well for his first audition and after that, every single time he performs, he's going to be benchmarked against that, and find himself falling short in the voters' eyes. A real pity and I'm resigned to the fact that he's prolly gonna be dropped soon.
Keane's Somewhere Only We Know sung by Stacey Solomon
She nailed it. Definitely. I think this is her best performance to date, and yes, to agree with them, she finally MOVED. oh my. She's MOVING, what Simon called a miracle. I daresay this could be the best performance for this round. Totally loved it, she gave a little of her own spin, she got the emotions flowing, basically, she nailed it. This is what she should be like, full of spunk and confidence. And yes, move more please. If not, moss is gonna start growing. The banter between Simon and Louis is really hilarious, it's really funny to see them at each other.
Jamie Archer with Rocks by Primal Scream
Simon: Jamie, I promise you this. This is nothing more than mind games, you were terrific tonight.
Yet another retort to Louis' comment that Jamie wasn't original at all. And again, cue hilarious moment when Cheryl says something about there being no rock week in the history of X Factor, and when Simon has a contestant whose roots are in rock, suddenly there's a rock week. To which Simon asked if she meant he did it on purpose, and she replied with a straight face, "Oh no, not at all, not at all." I love them as judges, it makes watching the comments really fun.
On to his performance, being in his element, I'm pretty sure he did well. No, I correct myself. He DID well. Superb stage performance (don't see how the pole dancing fit in though), check. Rock star personality, check. Nothing to fault so I don't know what Louis was griping about.
Rachel Adedeji singing U2's One
Now this time, it's Dannii and Simon. HAHA. I respect Rachel a lot. Being beat down in the first two weeks - by being in the bottom two - she came back fighting, came back even stronger. She's got the R&B/Soul voice, quite powerful and can suitably convey raw emotions. It was quite a good song to give the soul twist to it. Kudos to her. On a side note, this batch of final contestants seem to be very very very good to me, brimming with a lot of talent. They're all pretty much neck and neck in the race, but some are definitely slightly ahead of the others.
Olly Murs with Beatles' Come Together
Chest hair! HAHAHA. "Is that your move or Simon's move?"
The judges themselves pretty much about summed up everything there is to Olly. A really really talented contestant, he not only has the vocals, he's got the moves to match. At this point in time, I really don't know who I see in the final squaring off against each other. It has come to the point, that it pains to see anyone being dropped off the show. That is how good each of them are. EXCEPT for the twin horrors. How are they still in the show!?!?!?! I'm really hoping they get booted out this round, I can't stand them.
