The Saturday Mix #23 - what’s the use of keeping all the good things that you’ve found to yourself

Delorean - Seasun
Carrots in the sky. LOL! Very beach party song that I'm pretty sure would have everyone grooving to. It's very euphoric in its beats, quite heavy and sets the mood fast. The guys at Delorean said this, Delorean is an unheard of scenario in popular music: 4 guys from the Basque country currently based in Barcelona, free as air, high on O2, who have gradually moved away fromthe punk scene, and are now ready to embrace the kind of club music that a pop band would play. Also, they are currently working on their full length album, which I'm anticipating.

Delorean - Seasun (John Talabot's Kids and Drums Remix

Delorean - Deli (Acid Girls Remix)
It is indeed a deli-cious song. It's not too bad actually, but I much prefer the original to it.

Violens - Doomed (MGMT Remix)
Pretty sweet remix here, given treatment by MGMT of Kids and Time To Pretend fame. I am so in love with this song. There's a lot of unadulterated

Gotye - Learnalilgivinanlovin
One of the most feel good songs I've heard in a while. Guess where he's from.(Yes, Gotye is a one man show named Wally De Backer who's apparently born in Belgium but based Down Under.) He says
"Aussies should pronounced Gotye as “gore-ti-yeah”, using that inimitably dry and elongated sound they call an “accent”!

Wally can say that because he was born in Belgium (and he speaks English good).

Parties from overseas wishing to “name-check” Wally’s musical moniker should employ a complex system of pops and clicks, or alternatively, engage in a series of hand symbols that represent the following character: §."
I'm starting to like this guy, and his music.

Anyhow, following this, is a Passion Pit remix of the above song.

Gotye - Learnalilgivinanlovin (Passion Pit Remix)
As Gotye says, gotta learnalilgivinanlovin. Hence Passion Pit has given us this pretty dope remix.

The Temper Trap - Science of Fear (Hervé Remix)

Note: I can't think of what to feature for the usual end of month post. Ran out of ideas. If anyone can suggest something to feature, please do so in the comments or drop me a mail! Any suggestions and ideas would be greatly appreciated! Meanwhile, enjoy The Saturday Mix.

what I become no one could know

The Faux Noise sent me some stuff, and I checked it out. It's pretty cool and this is what they say about themselves, "The Faux Noise artistic roots are firmly planted in the fertile soil of the early seventies. They share their experimental approach with bands like Suicide and the whole art and music scene around Andy Warhol. Inventing new ways of expressing themselves as they go along, The Faux Noise could just as easily have been a painting, a movie, a fashion show or a short story. And if you turn around and look again maybe they are.

But while their dreamy soundscapes can remind you of the trippy escapism of the early seventies, The Faux Noise are true children of generation X. Their lyrics carry the melancholic mark of the new millennium, shattering our most precious illusions and questioning the very essence of what we used to think of as human. All the while simultaneously soothing us with melodies that are almost hauntingly beautiful. This is music for every broken heart and for all the lonely souls out there. This is rehab for your soul. Music saves."
interesting huh? and now on to their music.

Click the links to download.

The Faux Noise - I Can't Stop Breaking You Down (mp3)

The Faux Noise - Oh Father(Hymn) (mp3)

They remind me of a certain band, but it just evades me at the moment. damn.

Delta Spirit - People C'mon

Air France - Collapsing At Your Doorstep

oh your angelic mind

Micachu (& The Shapes) - Golden Phone
Micachu is actually Mica Levi, and she got together with her band The Shapes comprising of Raisa Khan on keyboards and electronics, and Marc Pell playing the percussion and drums. I believe her stage name is derived from a combination of her name and her own modified guitar called the 'chu'. Her music is very experimental and unique pop, which has been lauded by The Guardian for combining "hard experimentation with soft introspection, her scrappy, lo-fi production wrapped in warmth." She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, during which she was commissioned to write an orchestral piece for the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Not bad huh? Interestingly, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama has quite a number of notable alumni, including Daniel Craig, Joseph Fiennes, Ewan McGregor and Orlando Bloom.

The Mary Onettes - Lost(mp3)
and you say you have to be there/cause you feel so ordinary/but you know how much you need me/when the sadness comes for you

For a name such as The Mary Onettes (hailing from Sweden), one couldn't be faulted for thinking there's a female or two in the band. But that's unfortunately a mistake for they are Philip Ekström (vocals, guitar), Henrik Ekström (drums), Petter Agurén (guitar) and Simon Fransson (bass).

The Mary Onettes - Puzzles(mp3)

The Radio Dept. - The Worst Taste In Music(mp3)
Something from another small Swedish outfit who are slated to released their new album next year. Looking forward to it!

Violens - Doomed
The Big Apple aren't only known for producing people like Woody Allen, Michael Jordan and Robert de Niro. They have Violens a small indie quartet comprising Iddo Arad (synths/vocals), Ben Brantley (bass), Jorge Elbrecht (lead vocals/guitar) and Kris King (drums). They quote influences such as seashells, dreadlocks, gems, sand, veins, ribbons, steel. Hah, I like that.

The song has a bit of that choir sound to it, only that you don't have millions of other vocals backing it, but catchy drumbeats and awesome bassline. They dive right in from the get go, immersing you in whimsical and dreamy pop. They never let up throughout the song, giving this good vibe that resonates deep within you. This has to be a must listen for today (coupled with the fact they have a fantastically directed video by Mateo Ramirez).

the giant iris of the wide blue sky

The Rural Alberta Advantage - The Ballad of the RAA

The Rural Alberta Advantage - Drain The Blood

The Rural Alberta Advantage is Paul Banwatt, Amy Cole and Nils Edenloff. These songs are from their latest album "Hometowns" which was re-released in 2009 after they signed for Saddle Creek records in 2009.

Port O'Brien - My Will Is Good

Bat For Lashes - Pearl's Dream
Reminds me of the movie Beowulf somehow. Don't ask me why!

there are places in my head that i could never conquer

M83 - Don't Save Us From The Flames

Vampire Weekend - Horchata
Horchata or orxata is the name for several kinds of traditional beverages, made of ground almonds, sesame seeds, rice, barley or tigernuts (chufas). The beat plus lyrics make for a fancy song. Click here to download the mp3. This song is from their upcoming album, titled "Contra".

In December, drinking horchata/I'd look psychotic in a balaclava

Atlas Sound - River Card

Pictureplane - Gang Signs
Pictureplane is Travis Egedy. and yeah, that's all.

X Factor UK #9 - you're my favourite work of art

And once again, there's a guest helping out and giving valuable tips to the various contestants and this round, it's Michael Buble!

Olly Murs performing the Bewitched Theme Song
I disagree with Louis. I don't think he's the dark horse of the competition. He's prolly one of the favourites to win! This performance just reaffirmed how good he is. It looks to me that Olly and Danyl are opposites in this show. Danyl started off with a bang and is fizzling out, while Olly started off not quite as well as Danyl did, but is blossoming fast and fulfilling his potential.

Proud Mary by Elvis Presley sung be Rachel Adedeji
A big risk Rachel has taken, in trying her hand at one of The King's songs. Takes a lot of courage, and I daresay this calculated risk has paid off. Having been in the bottom two the last two rounds, she's certainly looking to avoid the drop. And I certainly hope people will begin to realise her talent, her powerful voice and personality and not put her in the bottom two.

Jamie Archer singing Angel of Harlem by U2
Love his new look - finally ditched the hanging thing by his side (what's that called anw?) Why's U2 not a big band? I'm quite confused here. And Elvis Presley is a big band? If the theme's big band, then that's pretty weird. Nothing special about this performance, like what Cheryl said, the something extra seems missing this time.

Stacey Solomon singing Disney's When You Wish Upon A Star
What a gorgeous dress! She looks every bit the french chanteuse.

Danyl Johnson singing Michael Buble's Feeling Good
Simon being biased again. What's new right? Is it good? I'm not too sure, but I know it's one of his better few performances ever since his "best first audition". Certainly could see himself putting his all into the song, but don't know if it's good enough to make him the favourite once again after his repeated let-downs.

Frank Sinatra's My Funny Valentine sung by Lucie Jones
It's really comical to see the judges' "fight" amongst themselves. Like Simon calling Dannii and Cheryl the two witches, and Louis and Simon somehow always having something to argue over. That said, I firmly believe she's the favourite now, along with Olly. She needs a bit more confidence in herself though. She's got a wonderful voice and she's beautiful. What more could she ask for? She's also prolly got the whole of Scotland behind her. Stunning rendition of Sinatra's song.

Joe McElderry singing Michael Buble's Sway
Can see a teeny little hesistance in his dancing. But, that was so damn good. I know I kept overlooking him earlier on, but man, that was a huge mistake on my part. He's really talented. Louis didn't mention anything about his singing, just kept going on about his likability.

Twin Horrors singing She Bangs by Ricky Martin
I don't know how in the blooming hell are these two still in the competition. One wonders how long can they actually last? Are people going to vote out the true performers (who can sing) for a pair of goofy two shoes who somehow or rather are still in based on their cute looks(?) It completely baffles me.

Michael Buble singing Cry Me A River
A standing ovation from all 4 judges. Fitting indeed of such a virtuosic performance. Such control over his voice and range. Impressive. Btw, Cheryl and Dannii look like they're trying to steal his thunder with cleavage baring dresses. LOL. But Cheryl's mermaid-ish dress looks horrible. Her greek goddess outfit was a million times better.

it's a fight for one

This will be a short post. Gotta run!

Ladyhawke - Paris Is Burning

The xx - Infinity

Grizzly Bear - About Face

Sonic Youth - Antenna

Edit: It's been 4 days since Blogger emailed me about this post, and so far they haven't replied to clarify anything, it's frustrating when I'm pretty sure I've not done anything wrong and am trying to find out what's wrong. There are 5 links here, of which 4 are youtube videos, while the last is a mediafire link hosted by Memory Tapes themselves. So I'm gonna remove the link for Green Knight.

The Saturday Mix #22 - i stand outside under broken leaves

This French pack here is dope. The whole world should get to know their music. And yes, Phoenix have been heavily remixed, which is a good thing. There's many different and new takes of their fantastic songs. I know that they've been really remixed so much, but it seems like there's a million remixes out there. It's rabid! Don't know if the remixes will ever stop rolling in like hot cakes off the pan, but I don't think I'll tire of them(and the remixes) though they should do more remixes of songs like Rome and Armistice, instead of 1901 and Lisztomania. Anyhow, testament to that, Phoenix decided to commission a release - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Remix Collection) - an eclectic compilation of 15 remixes of their songs by Yacht, Passion Pit, Animal Collective and Friendly Fires just to name a few. It just dawned on me how their album cover is of them dropping bombs, and it seems like they really dropped bombs filled with the best stuff in music.

Small little tidbit. I'm pretty sure many of you guys have heard of Daft Punk. Even I heard of them when I was younger. Band members Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, together with Laurent Brancowitz made up Darlin', an indie rock outfit, albeit for a short period. However, things didn't pan out as well and I think they disbanded. This led to Laurent joining up with Phoenix while Guy-Manuel and Thomas made up Daft Punk. Interesting huh.

Phoenix - Fences (Grincheux And Dangereux mix)

Phoenix - Fences (Nujax Remix)

Phoenix - Rome (Neighbors feat. Devendra Banhart Remix)
Not your usual remix - it's normally a dancier, more souped up version of a song - but this is slower, remixed down. Really love it.

Phoenix - Love Like A Sunset (Animal Collective Remix)

Phoenix - Love Like A Sunset (Shuttle Remix)
This trippy mix is by Shuttle, who's Nate Donmoyer of Passion Pit. Music is so exciting right now.

Phoenix- 1901 Bo Flex'd (Passion Pit Remix)

Phoenix - Lisztomania (Alex Metric Remix)

some lovers know it ain't gonna wear out

Phoenix - Armistice
ar·mi·stice
Pronunciation: \ˈär-mə-stəs\
Function: noun
Etymology: French or New Latin; French, from New Latin armistitium, from Latin arma + -stitium (as in solstitium solstice)
Date: circa 1707
: temporary suspension of hostilities by agreement between the opponents

just for fun. i totally love their song titles. i think they could be having a top 10 album of the year in their hands. nice.

Air France - June Evenings
Air France is a band from Gothenburg, Sweden. Their music has been described as post-rave bliss, beach foam pop, and Balearic disco. I certainly can identify with the post-rave bliss. It's like you're moving to the beat while floating in the clouds.

Air France - No Excuses
no more excuses left/waiting to fail, but not quite yet

Thursday, October 22, 2009

we're finding every day several ways that we could be friends

Atlas Sound - Quick Canal (feat. Laetitia Sadier)
Atlas Sound is actually Bradford Cox, who's the vocalist of Deerhunter. Interestingly, he accidentally posted a link of his mediafire account on deerhunter's blog, which contained the (at that time) yet to be released songs of Logos, the album he was releasing as Atlas Sounds. Anyhow, this song is really wonderful. Aurally, it was soothing via the use of the keyboard, and Laetitia certainly has that sort of lush voice which envelops you entirely. It fills the space you're in. I really really like this song, and it's highly recommended that you take a listen, and you won't even feel like 8 minutes has passed after listening to the song.

Atlas Sound - Shelia

Freelance Whales - Generator ^ First Floor
Sorta reminds makes me think of Fleet Foxes musically, but the voice is too clinically pop-ish. Makes me think of the Jonas Brothers. omg. They're definitely better than Jonas Brothers on any count.

Dan Deacon - Red F
A melting pot of instruments. It's nearly just noise (read: some if not most won't like it). But to me, it seems oddly.. nice. And the pace is really, really fast.

i used to think we can go on this way forever

The previous time Beat Radio was "featured", it was about their Sunday Matinee EP, which was pretty fetching. This time, they've released their next album "Safe Inside The Sound" on their own website, and it's chock full of wonderful stuff by them. Songs were all (save for one) written by vocalist Brian Sendowitz. These guys are real generous, putting up entire albums on their site for free download, for the sole purpose of spreading their love for music. Props to them. I like their lo-fi sound coupled with Brian's vocals. His voice may be unpolished, but it fits the songs they sing about and goes well with the guitars and drums.

Beat Radio - Behind the Blue(mp3)

Beat Radio - Follow You Around(mp3)
even though that i would be a fool/if i had to be a fool/i would for you/and i'd follow you around

what an emotive love song.

Beat Radio - The Lion and The Lamb(mp3)
album title comes from here.

By the way, I'm really looking forward to Saturday's post. it's gonna be rife with dope stuff. Stay tuned!!

X Factor UK #8 - i say a prayer with every heartbeat

UK X Factor updates! Seems like Louis is missing for this second live show. And also, I think Whitney Houston was in to give some help to the contestants and was present for the rehearsals. Neat!

Lucie Jones performs How Will I Know by Whitney Houston
She nailed it. Definitely. She's been really consistent, appeals to a lot of different voting groups. I think she could be the winner, if she manages to keep this up. Though honestly, I didn't expect her to do well this time, having to juggle dancing and singing (she seemed able to just do singing only, as she may be quite uncomfortable with herself at times). But boy, she came out of it stronger, and more experienced now.

Olly Murs performing Tina Turner's A Fool In Love
Olly-mania. Well said Dannii, well said indeed. That was a serious dapper performance he put in there, and he's proving himself to be the contestant to beat. Real good stuff there today. Simon looks awfully pleased with himself, and rightfully so. I mean having Olly under his tutelage and bringing the best out of him, it's good! BUT Simon is so damn cocky. "This is why all the contestants want to be mentored by me." hahaha.

Danyl Johnson sings Whitney Houston's I Didn't Know My Own Strength
The second Whitney song for the day. Seemed like an above average performance to me. Nothing that would make him the top, probably just to keep him out from the bottom two. But like what the judges said, to choose a Whitney Houston song, and an unfamiliar one at that, takes some courage. Maybe it's a tactic on Simon's part, he doesn't want Danyl to keep doing songs that will increase the expectations on himself, but songs that will keep him in the top half. And hopefully when he's in the top 4 or so, he'll start performing his best stuff. Conspiracy theory by yours truly (which sounds absurd and funny btw)

Jamie Archer singing Hurt by Christina Aguilera
I'm pretty sure most would have noticed by now - Simon always gives a standing ovation to his mentees. Obviously biased there no? Anyhow, on to Jamie's performance, quite an unexpected song choice. Initially I thought his raw vocals wouldn't have come through well, but more into the song, it seemed to me that his unpolished voice brought out his emotions better than it would if sung by say Christina herself or maybe even Lucie. It was really very fantastic, I thought he did well. Btw, Simon is always extremely effusive in his praise for his mentees as well.

Stacey Soloman sings Etta James' At Last
Simon says she's too out of her comfort zone which is both good and bad. And at the end, Dannii takes a dig at Simon's comment about Stacey being 'uncomfortable' - she came from singing in the bedroom to performing on the stage in front of so many people, and it's this discomfort on the stage that makes her charming. Personally, I thought it was a good rendition of the song. Pretty good control over the highs and lows, especially at the end. She might have aced the Whitney Houston song Danyl sang. Hmmms.

John and Edward performs Britney Spears' Oops.. I Did It Again
Gotta watch this for the comments by the judges. Some bordered on hesistant, maybe just trying to be nice to them, since they're young and all. But honestly, how can they still be in, I wonder. They seem like good entertainers, but vocally, they're lacking in every aspect.

Joe McElderry sings Whitney Houston's Where Do Broken Hearts Go
In Simon's words, his performance was 'note perfect' which pained him to say so (like huh?, what's so painful about saying that). While I don't have a ear to say for myself if it's note perfect, it's a definitely very very very good performance, sang from the bottom of his heart, pour all his soul into the song, and came out tops. Kudos.

let's not forget about the fear

this is pretty awesome, wonder how did the guys for New Moon (the second movie in the twilight series) get so many fantastic bands on board for the OST. There's dcfc, thom yorke(!!!), lykke li, the killers, muse, bon iver, sea wolf, ok go, grizzly bear plus a couple more. This OST is gonna be a blast yeahh.

The Killers - A White Demon Love Song
Day & Age was quite a letdown, seeing how Sam's Town really rocked things, but A White Demon Love Song probably redeemed themselves. It's more acoustic, focussing on the vocals and the guitar.

Lykke Li - Possibility
Oh this totally doesn't sound like your average Lykke Li song. It sounds like it came from an Enya album or something. But this song fits the vampire thing and this series to a T.

Thom Yorke - Hearing Damage
I don't know if this wasn't already a song written by Thom and not specifically for New Moon, or was it a song written by Thom at the behest of the guys at New Moon. If it's the latter, I don't know how they managed to bag Thom, but good lord, it's gold. And no, if you're expecting hearing damage after listening to this song, you're dead wrong. It's pure audio bliss from the Radiohead maestro.

Sea Wolf - The Violet Hour

The Saturday Mix #21 - i didn't catch the half of what had gone wrong

Lykke Li - Little Bit (Drake Remix)
Having previously featured the AutoErotique Bootleg Remix, I obviously did compare both remixes. But I can't find anything to fault with either remix, they're both so fantastic.

Kings of Convenience - I Don't Know What I Can Save You From
It's so wistful and melancholic. Stripped down and raw.

Kings of Convenience - I Don't Know What I Can Save You From (Röyksopp Remix)
I think Röyksopp has really done a very good job. I mean usually a remix changes the song quite a lot, like the pace, the beats, maybe extra lines or sorts, but the song hasn't lost the longing that you can hear in the original.

Pass Into Silence - Voices (Gabriel & Dresden Mix)

Bon Iver - Blood Bank (Duosseudo Remix)
It totally sounds different, but I kinda like it. And I'm pretty surprised, and I mean really surprised, that there's a Bon Iver remix. It's like how you don't do remixes off The Antlers' "Hospice". You know?

The Killers - Human (Armin Van Buuren Remix)

The Killers - Human (Thin White Dukes Remix)
These two remixes are here obviously for comparison's sake. I prefer AVB's.

skiffle and rag, shuffle and waltz

Kings of Convenience - Boat Behind
Literally boat behind.

This is single-handedly the most awesome, fantastic, lovely, fetching video. The polaroid look of the video, the pretty hitch-hikers(which so doesn't happen), makes me wanna set off on one road trip too(it's not just the ladies, really.) A totally summery song which makes you feel so damn light and airy and happy.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Everything With You
Is it really painful to be pure and innocent?

Orenda Fink - High Ground
She's better known as the other half of Azure Ray, and also her other collaboration, O+S, both of which I've featured before. She's pretty much a natural, really talented. Folk-ish sounding, she defies everything - if you actually hear what O+S sound like, it's quite hard to expect this coming from her.

Beach House - You Came To Me

Thursday, October 15, 2009

oh reckless abandon, like no one's watching you

The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition
When my friend introduced them to me, I was wondering who they are, because he said they're from down under, and the only band I've listened to from there, is Empire of the Sun. He assured me they were awesome, and the moment the first beat sailed right out of the speakers, I knew he wasn't wrong. And that I'm going to love them. Vocalist Dougy Mandagi was supposedly from Indonesia, he also does the guitar. Jonathon Aherne's on bass while Lorenzo Sillitto plays the lead guitar and keyboards. Finally, there's Toby Dundas giving the beats. This song is featured on (500)Days of Summer(both the official trailer and OST) starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. They've moved to London to try and build a fan base there and crack the UK market.

Something of note is that they are signed to Glassnote Records in the US, which notably manages Secondhand Serenade and Phoenix. This is a sign of the things to come from them. All the songs featured in this post are from their album "Conditions".

The Temper Trap - Science of Fear
Very very nice and interesting video accompanying it.

The Temper Trap - Fools
I like this sound that's quite evident in the album. It's not that stripped down to be lo-fi, cause there're parts where the drums feature quite prominently. But neither is it like full fledged all out rock. Good balance I must say. Suits Dougy's vocals.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

you turn around and life's passed you by

Little Boots - Stuck on Repeat
Little Boots isn't all that "little". She's got massive songs, such as this.

Phoenix - Fences
I ever thought of doing a Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix review, but then again, it's so damn bloody good, nearly everyone has probably done one one way or another, so forget the review. It's just like "Merriweather Post Pavillion". So much hype and coverage, even just purely by word of mouth, everyone knew how good they were. So, just enjoy the awesome song!

Doves - There Goes The Fear

X Factor UK #7

Rachel Adedeji singing Let Me Entertain You by Robbie Williams
Very very strong opening performance. That was some good choreography and she did very well to cope with that, on top of singing live.

Olly Murs performing She's The One by Robbie Williams
Second Robbie Williams song! He's got a green tongue! Must have been some sweet he ate. Anyhow, very nice rendition of the song. Quite good looking guy, singing his heart out. None too shabby.

Danyl Johnson singing Jennifer Hudson's And I Am Telling You
This is the performance everyone has been waiting and expecting from him. If only he had done this in the earlier two instances, instead of putting himself in such a precarious position. Impressive vocals, good range. And my, he nearly destroyed the microphone stand. Omg, Dannii and Simon "fighting" hahahah.

Jamie Archer with T.Rex's Bang A Gong (Get It On)
This is the second standing ovation Simon has given today. Hmms. And it's weird hearing Louis getting the boos. It's usually Simon. Louis starting to give the technical comments. HHAHAHA, and now Simon vs. Louis. Getting interesting here.

"Simon, you know ABSOLUTELY nothing about rock!"

Stacey Soloman with Coldplay's The Scientist
It's like praises galore. Everybody was gushing over her. Her personality, getting out of her comfort zone, her vocals. But what's most striking is her innocence and genuine-ness (what better word can I use? it sounds weird) She and Lucie Jones stand out the most. Which brings us to the next performance.

Stacey Soloman singing Footprints in the Sand by Leona Lewis
The coincidental thing is Simon wrote this song. And yes, Leona Lewis was a winner of Season 3, under Simon's stead. No doubt she will be drawing comparisons with Leona Lewis, it's inevitable. That said, she, and quite a number of other contestants, are still having the nerves. Stacey as well. They need to conquer that, which is why they should get lessons on confidence from Jamie Archer, though Cheryl says she can still see a bit of the lack of faith in himself, in his eyes.

The results for the first round.
I'm pretty surprised that Rachel was in the bottom two. There's so many more acts that should have been down there instead of her.

The Saturday Mix #20

well, here's a little French house producer and DJ, Fred Falke sampling.
The Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage (Fred Falke Remix)

Lykke Li - I'm Good, I'm Gone
I really lykke, oh i meant like her. Pardon me, but I really found the loudspeaker part totally out of place. And yes, like the description of the video says, THAT white hair chick, is ROBYN.

Lykke Li - I'm Good, I'm Gone (Fred Falke Remix)
He really is tearing the house down. All I need is that disco ball.

Grizzly Bear - Fred Falke (Fred Falke Remix)

La Roux - Bulletproof (Fred Falke Remix)
Nothing special here, just adding those regular stuff and it becomes a remix.

Gossip - Heavy Cross
Oh jeez, I was always sure I'd actually introduced this song before. Boy was I wrong, but it's never, NEVER too late. She's got quite a solid voice. And she is Beth Ditto, featured in SMD's Cruel Intentions

Gossip - Heavy Cross (Fred Falke Remix)

Friday, October 9, 2009

give ourselves some time ten years from the day

White Rabbits - Percussion Gun
2 drums. A piano. interesting indeed!

The Rural Alberta Advantage - Don't Haunt This Place

Krezip - I Apologize
I can't remember where I heard this song from, but the tune's always been stuck in my head. Quite a lovely slow song.

Airliner - Everything That's You(mp3)

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

there's sadness written on every corner

The Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage
Whoever this Geoff McFetridge guy is, he is so damn brilliant, doing all the hand drawn animations. It really fits well with the whole song, tune, beat and all.

Neon Indian - Terminally Chill
First, it was Deadbeat Summer, now there's Terminally Chill. Is this how taking psychedelic drugs feel like? The wailing rise and fall of synth beats was particularly good, drew me into the song.

Passion Pit - Folds In Your Hands
Feeeeel it rainnn, feeeel it rainnn.

ohh and i bet you guys already know, Moth's Wings was used as the closing song on Gossip Girl on Episode 4 - Dan de Fleurette!

A Fine Frenzy - What I Wouldn't Do
From her new album "Bomb in a Birdcage", from which was probably taken from the lyrics of this song. What would we do without these female singers? Anyhow, I noticed that the female singers/groups like to use the hand clapping beat thing. It's here in this song, Au Revoir Simone uses it quite a bit as well. Love them.

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

the noons are hot with heartache aplenty

Phoenix - Run Run Run
Slow and sweet. Thomas Mars provides them awesome vocals. He sings "I should be drifting/Far enough to reach the shore/It's a clear view/Don't you underestimate me"

about running and falling. (obviously) and clearly, these guys have a knack for making catchy fantabulous pop songs. BUT with their own unique elements, such as the keyboard. and man, if they were making such music in 2004, it's not a wonder Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is such a blast. Which brings me to the next song, from said album.

Phoenix - 1901

Brooke Waggoner - Heal For The Honey
Such soothing piano accompaniment. Very talented young lady here.

Thievery Corporation - Sweet Tides
Plucked from their fifth album "Radio Retaliation". They are DJ duo Rob Garza and Eric Hilton. Having varied and wide influences ranging from dub, acid jazz, reggae, Indian classical, Middle Eastern and Brazilian allows for their expression of music without restriction. And they sound unique too.

X Factor UK #6 - hanging on to hope when there's no hope to speak of

The Reflecting Skin - Traffickers
This is psychedelic at it's best.

Aeroc - Idiom

This time, it's the XFactorUK contestants going to the judges' lavish and opulent houses for a performance with various guest judges and the mentoring judges themselves.

Lucie Jones singing Gloria Estefan's Anything for You
She's really really fantastic. Beauty and a brilliant voice, and just that little innocence, will probably capture the hearts (and votes) of many in UK.

Daniel Pearce with George Michael's Praying for Time
Such emotion, oh my gosh.

Jamie Archer singing Stop Crying Your Heart Out by Oasis
Being the oldest contestant left at 34, is certainly no barrier for him seeing how much passion he has for singing. And singing this, it was unlike his earlier performances in that it was more heart ,soul and singing, and less showmanship.

Here are some of the results. It's really heart wrenching to see some who are really good, but there're others who are just better. But of course, there're those who you know wouldn't make it, and they did, and some, who wouldn't have made it, but actually did. Someone's life could just change in an instant, purely based on the judges' words and their belief in them. Look and see.

Ethan and Lloyd
It's pretty obvious that Ethan wouldn't make it, cos like how Cheryl put it, some people come, and they think their looks can carry them through. Lloyd was a bit see-saw-ish, and yes indeed his age could have been a factor against him. Nevertheless, he went through though he probably wouldn't win.

Daniel, Olly and TreyC
oh my, this certainly caught me by surprise. Simon mentions taking risk, and I certainly see him doing so. There's a powerhouse, but does she make it through? Another's really good, he put a million percent into it, but it's all about giving others a first chance. And lastly, the one he took a risk on. So who's in and who's out?

Lucie Jones
It's actually pretty obvious that she'd go through, she's one of the best and most consistent. But this had to go up purely because of the way she celebrated and Dannii's reaction to her celebration.

Jamie and Nicole
Does crowd favourite Jamie go through, or is it Nicole, who put everything on the line after her dad passed away? So guess who says "You believed in me", to which Simon replies "I do."

Danyl
Well, it's pretty known that he has so much to live up to, with the perfect first audition. While I supported him right from the start, he disappointed with his subsequent two performances. I honestly thought Simon would decide against him, but surprisingly, Simon's utter belief in Danyl and probably a risk, sent him through to the live finals. Bittersweet, considering Daniel Pearce didn't get through.

Despina and Stacey
Both totally deserved to go through, but only one made it. It's heartbreak and ecstacy, and the way Dannii put it, I initially thought maybe both wouldnt have gone through.

Daniel (Fox) and Rikki
Her indecision makes you wonder if Daniel actually got through and she was thinking really hard about other contestants, or did he not make it, and she was agonising over whether she should send him through/reaffirm he decision not to send him to the finals.

this city's no longer mine

Luomo - Love You All(mp3)
Luomo is Finnish producer Sasu Ripatti actually, amongst other stage names, such as Vladislav Delay, Sistol, Uusitalo and Conoco.

Metronomy - Not Made For Love
This is the title track out of their new EP "Not Made For Love".

Nujabes - Counting Stars
Nujabes is the alias of Japanese DJ Jun Seba, and it is an anagram of his first and last name spelled backwards and combined.

This is way chill! Soul and jazz elements make it love.

Nujabes - Another Relection
Ambient music should be rolling like how Nujabes rolls.

where did you come from

The Rosenbergs - Birds of a Feather
I'm not sure if they're even active anymore. Quite a lovely song they have here.

Goldpost - Rewind
I'm pretty sure you all know that it came out on How I Met Your Mother, one of the most legendary shows currently (i'm obviously biased but heck). Anyhow, it's such an awesome song. totally love the chorus.

"i'm asking you to stay/the words are finally here"

can picture myself walking through an avenue of trees in the autumn, strolling lazily.

Beach House - D.A.R.L.I.N.G
sounds so sombre yet so beautiful. it's akin to seeing a very beautiful woman, and just standing in awe of the woman.

Beach House - Gila
They certainly know how to make retro-ish beautiful (maybe slightly moody) music. totally sweet.
